Are these tank builds any good?
Don't be discouraged though, and don't be afraid to make a few mistakes in the passive tree. It will take time to learn it all, but as I said, class forums is by far the best place to go for a new viable cheap build. If you still want to make something yourself (like I did when I began), then expect your first couple chars to be bad.

" Holy shit what is this disgusting tone against a new player when you've got a million chars who can't even reach maps besides one. @OP Take your time and look at the class forums for inspirations/ideas/etc. "so you can see who has more PvPenis" - Chris Wilson "Everyone can at least be exposed to Leo's PvPenis" - Chris Wilson Last edited by Kenzorz#6970 on Jun 22, 2014, 6:30:48 PM

To be tanky you must understand poe's defense mechanics. I see you go in the wrong way at the very first concept, there is no such thing call Strengt, Dex, Int tank here... Just Armor, Evasion, block, Mind over matter, insta leech... kind of those.
You could look down at the very bottom of this forum, then take an easy build to start with, and learn by yourself. " Terrible manner Last edited by camapngu133#7988 on Jun 23, 2014, 9:42:56 AM

" Replied you via PM. Take your time to read that, and i hope for an answer Why are you so concerned about my chars (who can go to maps btw) =)? Do you need to have 100lvl char to know about game mechanics? Or to have rights to even speak here? Telling somebody (hard) truth is now called "assault"? Okay... " (sarcasm) Should i said:

"don't worry, sweetie. it's okay. your builds are slightly bad, but you'll be good later. take a cookie.
You're a great guy, and shouldn't listen to anyone who insist on reading anything about the game mechanics, those are mean guys. You should read couple of builds in shadow sub-forum, try to level them, and when nothing will do, you can freely come to forum and claim that the drop rates are horrible, bosses one-shot you and whole game is unfair"? Remember, suffering is convenient.
That is why many people prefer it. Happiness requires effort. |

Thanks for the responses. By 'tank', I don't mean getting all enemies to target me and only me, I mean, making my character extremely robust and survivable.
I took different approaches with each type of 'tank'. For the Dexterity tank, I tried to maximize dodge change, and life regen, whilst giving some elemental resist and bow damage. I deliberately ignored the passive that makes your dodge chance convert to armor, because I want my dexterity tank to play differently to my strength tank. For my strength tank, I took all skills I could relating to shield block, life, life on kill, armor increases, elemental resistances...etc..., and some skills to increase one-handed sword damage. For my intelligence tank, I took all skills I could relating to energy shield, life and elemental resistances, and some skills relating to minion damage. So you can see that my dexterity tank aims to be a very high dodge, high regen character who stays away from the action to snipe from long range with a bow. My strength tank aims to be a meat shield with a good shield in one hand and a sword in the other. My intelligence tank aims to do damage from afar by summoning minions, yet also be very durable if it does get hit, because of all the energy shield and life buffs. Is this game really so brutal that one needs to follow a pre-described build to get to end-game? You can't just make up a sensible sounding build and get it done with that? And, if I find a good weapon and good active skills, will I have enough dps eventually to be able to survive at end-game despite taking primarily defensive passive skill points? (I did take SOME offensive passive skill points, but it took a big back-seat to defense, because making defensive characters is what I enjoy doing in these sort of games...) |

It's risky to go hybrid life/es if you don't use a Shavronne's Wrapping unique chest or Solaris Lorica unique chest. You will have much lower life than a pure life build so chaos damage will really hurt as it completely bypasses your es if you don't have one of those chests. Rather than trying to have a large amount of both life and es it is a lot easier and efficient to maximize one or the other.

" You can make up a sensible build and get it done. The problem is that none of your builds are even close to sensible because you don't understand the defensive mechanics and interactions of the game. |

Took a look at the dexterity tank and noticed lots of room for improvement.
1 - You have no ability resource passives (mana regen, mana leech, blood magic, cost reduction) so you're going to have a hard time using late game abilities. Not only that, but you don't have a single Int node (which also gives mana) which will restrict your equipment & gem choices. 2 - The big advantage of going with a pure evade build is to be able to take Acrobatics & Phase Acrobatics without any penalty other than the passive points to take them. You go right by them. 3 - 120 passive points is the maximum number of points a character can have in the game. It requires LV99 AND choosing an extra passive point as the reward in a certain quest 3 times. Realistic, you should count on having around 80-85 points by the time you reach the endgame and your build better come together a long time before then, otherwise you're going to have trouble reaching the endgame in the first place. 4 - Block is one of the primary ways to build a tanky character and you're not going to have that in any serious amount with a bow build unless you use several specific unique items. 5 - You want to minimize the number of generic +10 stat nodes you take. |

" This. Before you get creative, at the very least know how things work. You're not going to be able to build a rocket if you don't know how to use a screwdriver. |

Just took a quick look at the strength tank and not only does it have the mana problem of the dex-build, but it also has no dexterity either. So not only can you not use most of the equipment or gems in the game, but you also wouldn't be able to hit anything. At least that's an easy problem to fix - just take Resolute Technique (it's far left from the Marauder start) and don't take any crit nodes.
Speaking of which, crit nodes are very much an all or nothing thing. They're very powerful if you specialize in them, but taking just a few of them is mostly a waste of points. |
