Is This Game Still Unplayable Due To Desync?
" I don't think this is a GGG or PoE forum issue, so much as it is an issue of human nature. So long as there are rules, there will be ways to use those rules to one person's advantage. In a given game, some uses will be considered fair, and others will be considered exploitation or cheating. Unless you had a really good AI adapting the rules to every situation, the exploitation will always exist to some degree. The point at which GGG decides to change the rules or penalize the player is something for them to decide, just as they get to decide at what point our commentary might have stepped over the line. This isn't a democracy and it isn't the rule of law in which no developer is above the law. Many of us are used to somewhat egalitarian standards of conduct. That doesn't mean the same egalitarian rules apply here.
Spoiler
It's too bad everyone on the planet doesn't know what that luxury is like. It would be nice if all people throughout the world could speak up without having to ever fear for their lives.
This forum isn't the real world, and the rules GGG has set up seem to be set up that way to try and foster a better overall game experience. Some might disagree on the effectiveness of GGG's approach, but it is difficult for us to have the same perspective GGG does. Look at it this way - are you so positive that what you post is correct that you are willing to be jobless, penniless and living on the street if you are wrong? This game is GGG's livelihood. Doing the right thing for the long term of the game is what keeps the power on and allows them to do this as a full time job. How many people** would seriously jeopardize their job just to act however they want? The name and shame policy might initially seem odd, but when you've seen what "witch hunts" can do to people, it makes far more sense to act out of an overabundance of caution. As a business gets larger and more money and people are involved, it will tend to behave this way more and more. The lack of logic or consistency can be cited as a cause for this, but that isn't true. It can be blamed on political correctness, oversensitivity or excess litigation. These aren't the real problem though, they are side effects of the problem. The real problem is that someone has to screw things up for everyone else. Someone has to put their own wants and needs so high up the ladder, that everyone else is acceptable collateral damage. The complex and usually changing password requirement is an example. Antivirus software is another. Seals on food and medicine are one more thing we have to deal with because one person decided their own needs made it acceptable for other people to suffer or die. Just imagine that at point in time, you could buy a container of food and not worry that some nutcase was trying to poison you! The list of things not to do grows longer with every new "creative" exploitation. This isn't GGG's fault. It isn't the fault of most posters or people. GGG acting in one case and being cautious to act in another is not something they are doing to be malicious. If they just wanted to be evil and snarky, they could have done it from the very beginning. Keep in mind also, that as much as we may admire them for making an awesome game (or mostly awesome for those who still see a few flaws) GGG is still a group of humans. They do the best they can, and to expect them to be superhuman and 100% consistent is unrealistic. Even a Golem 30 has its faults. Look at the referees of most sporting matches. Do they make calls the fans disagree with? Are they doing it intentionally? The answer in the vast majority of cases, is Yes to the first, and No to the latter. Justice is blind, screwy and at times may seem to be guided by RNG. That doesn't mean it is guided by corruption, retribution or any other malevolent intention. I think the best way for me to put this is to say that too many people post in here as if GGG was their own personal sounding board, their psychiatrist, or their punching bag. That isn't to say the game is perfect by any means (though I find it to be very good.) The posters who do want changes/improvements in the game should post in here as if GGG was their architect, their home builder or their designer. If you tell the architect, "I don't like the garage" it is a waste of the architect's time and gets you no where. If you tell the architect, "The garage is too short for me to get my truck into" then the architect has something to work with. Both sides of feedback are important. Knowing what isn't working well is probably more important than what is working well. Ah well, time to fire up the game and have some fun :-) ** Discounting those who are only working for some extra spending money, and don't depend on their job to survive. " It is not very often I read a long post on this forum and keep reading it until the end, then re-reading it to remember the thoughts. Wish I had something clever to add - I am just going to tip a hat in your direction for now, sir. |

What was really bugging me is the fact that people(and devs) claim that one of the most important factors of desync are stuns and chance to hit, then why, while some of my characters have both unwavering stance and resolute technique,so there is no quetion of chance to hit or stuns, still desync like crazy. Not to mention how much i desync in a plain open area without any monsters at all while moving with whirling blades,or sometimes by just walking.I do think there is something wrong with the game or the engine or the servers,i have no idea about technical issues.
And one of these days i am thinking of recording a desync mix video to prove how unbeleivably bad it is for me,even as i have the fastest(24mgbps),by the most expensive/reliable net provider in my country. https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/417287 - Poutsos Flicker Nuke Shadow

Going desync when alone in town is nice too!

Lets get real for a moment.
Keep mind, the following is not anexcuse so much as it issimply something to consider. GGG is an indie developer for all intents and purposes. PoE is their first game as a studio. Someone asked earlier why this game has trouble with desync while SC doesnt. There's your answer. Resources. Money to afford those resources. Tech which serves as an example of both. PoE is a fledgling title developed by a relatively new studio. Theyve created something amazing no doubt snd they have the community to back it up. Due to the simple fact that they give a shit, I feel GGG has earned the right to be shown some respect in return. They are obviously aware of this issue. We dont need to keep reminding them. They can see the chat logs when it happens. Lol Due to the success of PoE i feel that over time this issue will be addrressed in a more substantial manner. But for now, lets give them the benefit of the doubt by accepting that this isnt a billion dollar studio were dealing with. Not yet. :P Keep up the great work GGG |

" Indeed but you will always have those people who can't help but complain non-stop, despite being given information surrounding it. Saying, "it amateur, poor coding" blah blah blah is correct, but not constructive. ever. Just so bored with it all. GGG have been candid about desync since the start. Thankgod we are actually able to work around/with it to help the issue. Just for try for see and for know -2013!

It never has been unplayable because of desync, people who state that are greatly exaggerating really

I'm very worried about that we stay with that engine and that netcode for the rest of the game, even if "Act 10" is released in many years. Staying with the current technic will harem the game much more than building something new, this time more solid and capable of doing what the gameplay needs. PoE is a game that offers so much content and stuff but it's actual engine just can't handle it to scale up with the content. Same for netcode which results in stuff like lag/desync etc.
Of course the reason for desync are also some design decissions and mechanics. GGG doesn't seems to compromise there or even try a workaround solution (more servers for example). Basicly these are the reason why I stopped playing PoE. I would like to come back when the networe issues are solved, the overall game-performance get's better and you are no longer punished for playing solo/selffound. |

" Honestly, I doubt any sane game development team would continue development in this engine for that long. They could rather release PoE II continuing the story there but containing the major gameplay elements. And I won't doubt for a second that this is exactly what will happen if the 10 Acts plan is continued. Last edited by Nightmare90#4217 on Jun 10, 2014, 10:42:48 AM

I've mentioned this before, but I hope at some point whoever it is that makes the big decisions (Chris? though I doubt he makes them alone) will put on the big-boy pants and make a decision that might be difficult in the short-term, but would in the long-term be overall better for the game.
Something along the lines of: - Start a funding campaign specifically for the engine re-write, use the money to headhunt a damn good engine programmer for a two-year contract. - Grab Cryengine or Unreal 4. 90% of the engine work done for you! - Develop content that can be easily ported over in tandem (and in later stages, simply develop content for both engines in tandem). Sorry, no more armor rigging. Also, Yay! No more armor rigging! - Enjoy a much more positive atmosphere on the forums, in the game, and probably in the office as the looming shadow of this dead-end shitty engine fades away!
