the first game I can think of that I loved that I'm quite certain very few people would know about is Eric the Unready (1993, Legend Entertainment). Best comedy game I've ever played. I'd personally recommend it over any other comedy game, such as monkey island or sam and max or leisure suit larry or grim fandango, but it's a text-based game (with pictures) so it may not suit all tastes, but it should (reads easy — hell I played it at like age 12 or something)

I can think of two other games which I really love, but I wouldn't call them unknown (sorta like many of the games on here):

Rise of the Triad (1995, Apogee/3D Realms): Not too well known to my knowledge. This was supposed to be the sequel to Wolfenstien 3D. Very possibly the best FPS I've ever played (balancing the games based off time they were made)

Nox (1999, Westwood Studios)
Possibly quite well-known, but still very unknown overall. This is probably the main one I should look to replace to mention a different game instead.
That said, I still love this game like crazy. It's one of the best competitive multiplayer fantasy/medieval game I've ever played, along with DotA (probably 3rd place) and Guild Wars (1st or 2nd).

Turns out that post is only about lesser-known games though.

Liero is fantastic, yes. I should have put that on my list of favorite lesser-known games

Here's a list of my overall favorite games. Hard to order them but I guess I'll try:

#1. Starcraft: Brood War — the god of all competitive games, if not all PC games entirely. Good single player game, great cutscenes, and one of the first games which had the ability to play custom games which substantially differed from standard play.

#2. Guild Wars — Pretty much the best PvP in a non RTS/FPS setting. No grind gameplay, lots of content (and added content), no monthly fee, pretty good graphics and music.

#3. Baldur's Gate II & Throne of Bhaal
The #3 spot was extremely hard to call, namely with the game Nox. Considering Nox was a PvP fantasy game, and that already took up spot #2, I decided to switch to Baldur's Gate II — what I'd call the best authentic RPG ever.

Other games with HUGE honorable mentions:
Nox & Rise of the triad (previously mentioned in my post)
Unreal Tournament (UT99)
Penumbra: Overture, & The Black Plague
Amnesia: The dark descent (last 3 great horror/puzzle games)
Max Payne (surprisingly good single player FPS — plays like a book or comic)
Planescape: Torment — never played this, probably my one gaming regret. I bought the 5-CD(?) pack, and I think I even installed it, but never played. It was at a huge time in gaming history and I was too busy with other games I suppose.

Edit: I also had to add Space rangers 2. Apparently it's got the best user-score on metacritic when looking at a sample size of over 50 (actually it's a sample size 73 or something... a bit small but still kinda respectable)

I am a traditionalist:

1. X-com: Alien Invasion
Extremely good game. It was a bit to the hard side to actually get through the game, but it is very rewarding to kill ETs. A remake is still in beta and needs some more months before it gets intuitive. However, it is freeware and can be found here:

2. Bubble Bobble
What can you say? Cute little dinos spitting bubbles of their own size on Commodore 64. That and truely legendary endings makes it an epic.
There is a two-player speedrun available for viewing here:

3. A Mind Forever Voyaging
A pure gem in interactive fiction. How can that be fun? Well this is pretty unique in the way, that you cannot do anything that wrong untill the ending of the game. The descriptions of a slightly futuristic world is excellent and as soon as you understand the basics of how it works there are hundreds of hidden description to be found!
The game is copyrighted by Activision, but has as far as I know been unavailable for more than 10 years.
I appear to be living in "Romance Standard Time". That has to be good! :)
