PoE really having a shiny future or is it just switching player bases?

Why not? The game's already been around for that long. There are more acts planned, and as a F2P with regular content patches it gets a steady influx of new people. It's like an MMO in that regard. There are some indie online games out there that have been around for 15+ years and still generate money.

People still play D2, too, and it's not been getting actual content in ages, and it's technically dated.

While I'm not happy with all aspects of the game, I don't doubt its longevity.
yeah thats IF people play

i doubt poe will have a good amount of players left at that point
GGG has said before they don't mind a tiny base of hardcore players.
Probably a much higher percentage of people who pay to play while having a lot less expenses on servers/desync.

So I think the main reason they're not really concerned with desync is because the community has risen to numbers that are much, much too large for their own needs/wants.
Once they get back down to a few hundred players, desync will be a thing of the past and GGG will be happy again. Lot less pressure on the devs too.
Vote +1 to change Path of Exile to Path of Nerfs.
We hate to say, but ProjectPT was right.

I could be the only player in the world and it wouldn't make the desync any different.

There are some points that I'd like to clarify that have come up since it was initially posted:
Desync is not affected by stress on our servers (as explained in the above article).
Buying more servers doesn't solve the problem. We have enough servers currently. When they're overloaded, they fail to spawn new areas, rather than affecting combat prediction.
Casually casual.

Interesting. I heard closed beta players say Desync wasn't as much an issue with only a few hundred players. Ah well. We'll see. The way it's going right now, GGG will get the smaller/more hardcore player-base they're after.

They won't, because the niche audience, if in some fashion we can call this hardcore, require several more non-niche players to supply orbs to 'top-pyramid' the niche.

It can't work.
Casually casual.

To be honest, that problem is fixed by the more "automated" players that got banned from Diablo 3. They literally have no need, nor want for casual players.
I'm casual as fuck though. Hence why I'm doing some gemcraft at the moment :)

That was a prediction made several months ago, a prediction given in feedback, feedback ignored, to a point that some believe it is WAI. While I've lost faith and trust in GGG, I still can't bring myself to accept they intend this. But while they insist on a model which suggests nothing else and refuse to make improvements to counter it, it is becoming more difficult and I'm not looking forward to the day I might have to admit how naive I've been.
