I wouldn't even bother on 12.04. I have tried everything and I can't get PoE to run in 12.04, only 11.10.
I succesfully start it on Wine 1.5.3 beta in my 12.04, but it's too slow.
@Getsby I find anything above 1.5.1 is laggy for PoE, and anything under 1.3 isn't supported.

I suggest using 1.4 for your version of wine. It will run incredibly well on 1.4

Well fantastic just finished "testing" poe with wine works a charm
Fresh install of 12.04 with wine straight off repos did not touch a thing worked out of the box windowed at the moment will try full screen and let you know.it did get choppy at one stage but just logged out and back in and it came right.
What a wonderful game worth the 10 bucks to get a key
Game is freeze (window stops responding) after some time of gaming in wine 1.5 and patched wine 1.4 on my ubuntu =( The music and the cursor will continue to work. Only the picture freeze.

Does anyone know how to fix it?

Got it running! :)

System:
"
Debian Squeeze 2.6.32-5-amd64
wine-1.5.3 (with both patches applied from this thread)
AMD Turion X2 dual-core mobile technology (2,20GHz)
ATI Radeon HD 3400

I had some problems with the installation in the beginning, it did not actually install anything.
I then compiled wine-1.5.3 with both patches but there were still some errors.
What helped me then is removing (or renaming) the ".wine" folder.
Installation started but took quite some time at "Allocating Space".

Only tested it a few minutes but seems to run stable with some frame drops here and there. Had around ~40fps.
