One step in there that I think may have been missed, and I've seen it from both Blizz and GGG, is that people resort to using traded items to build more powerful characters. The devs see this power increase, and implement a nerf to try and 'rebalance'. This further makes the gear you find while clearing content suboptimal for the content your in, and further erodes the game experience. As the process repeats, there's less a feeling of entitlement, and a more genuine need for good gear to play the game effectively.

i was trying to get that across but probably just did a pretty bad job. yours is easier to read.

it's the spiral of death.

Just didn't see much in the way of nerfs in there. That plays a big role. The character's innate power is diminished, even though it's the power creep in the gear that causes the issue.

"difficulty curve balanced around it" was where the nerfs were implied, but yeah, probably not the best wording
You can say the same thing about any mechanic that some people use better than others.

As the playerbase becomes more powerful, through whatever means, the game is re-balanced to suit the majority. New players have a harder time catching up. Generally at that point new players are given better newbie gear to compensate.

Trading/Build knowledge/XP/monster knowledge/Skills in general all take time to accumulate, and provide an advantage in game over a 'newbie'.

Personally i enjoy trading/build knowledge over xp/monster knowledge/skills. I focus my efforts there, whereas other people may focus their efforts in other areas. God bless. Live and let live, and have fun playing!

My generation: Hey people who use deoderant get hotter chicks in the club, better go buy some deoderant.

New generation: Deoderant is unfair, make deoderant illegal. Whine about evil corporations who make deoderant for evil money.

The most enjoyable games tend to avoid nerfing if at all possible, and instead rely on buffing to alter player behavior. If a nerf occurs, it's targeted at a specific problem, not a global lowering of overall power. From what I've seen, GGG creates uniques that some players can nearly 'break the game' with, and then nerfs the passive tree or a skill to bring things in line, affecting everyone, regardless of their gear.

Not sure what deodorant has to do with anything.
