POE= Ninja looting game?

I've stated this elsewhere and it doesn't seem to gain any traction but I'll say it again.

It isn't ninja-looting if the timer expires. the loot is only "yours" while the timer is up. They cannot loot the item when the timer is up, therefore they cannot ninja anything. They can certainly take loot on the ground not allocated to anyone by the timer, but that is not ninja looting.

Ninja looters - is a phrase that in my time of online gaming has always referred to someone who circumvented the loot rules for personal gain. If the loot rule system (either explicitly stated in the game or decided upon by the group) is not circumvented, than the party responsible is not a ninja.

Since you're the mod and you double posted, I guess I can double post my reply - please warn me if this isn't the case.

The reason it doesn't gain any traction is because it is irrelevant. It is a straw man argument because the timer is completely irrelevant. Ninja looters, griefers, jackasses, call them what you will - they block other players from reaching the named loot or race ahead and hit chests and/or mobs far enough away that the timer is completely irrelevant.

PS: Err not double posted, cross posted, sorry.

for practical purposes timer is non-existant
and everyone that that takes an item that they obviously dont need and someone else in the party might is ninja looting
you obviously dont even know what ninja looting is so here it is:

Looting specific items off enemies that the player's own party defeated before the party has formally decided who should do so, or in direct contradiction to a decision that someone else should loot.

Consistently looting all defeated enemies at the earliest possible moment, thus precluding any other party member from receiving any treasure, even when nothing special is to be had. (This is also known as "loot whoring".)

Looting items that the player cannot use for the sole purpose of selling or trading it.

also this:

Similarly, at times there may be a physically accessible treasure that is being guarded (e.g., a treasure chest), such that any attempt to loot it will provoke the guardians into attacking; a player who waits near such a treasure for another player to engage the guardians - and then loots it himself while the other player is occupied in combat - is considered a ninja looter (effortlessly acquiring a treasure at someone else's risk and expense).

IMO, as it was said many times, it's alright how it is.
Just play with friends you know, and what is even better go on teamspeak with them.
This way you will play better and more organized as a group.
Also you can make sure that everybody is getting the loot he/she needs.

If I play with my friend we just pick up those items ... most of the time it doesn't even matter who had the timer.

Interesting fact is that even white items are really interesting. If they got really good sockets we usually take them with us. White items don't even have a timer.

I recommend: Either play solo or with friends you know.
I guess it's possible to meet some nice people who will play the way you guys want it, but you should ask yourselves the question if you wouldn't be greedy too if rares are lying around :P.

*sigh* here's another example of someone who's never played DI and DII.

DI, DII : oh yes I enjoyed those in the past... oops a decade ago. Well, may be it's time to move on. I feel that main opinion among players is not to maintain the sneaky ninja system, neither to lock the loot, it is to have a decent timer so that chances remain equal to loot.

probably because i am such a masochist and enjoy constant disconnections and desync....
Playing only with friends or playing alone is not a solution, it's a workaround. The problem is still there, and it is a problem. I have never ever heard a reason why we should have FFA loot. I just hear "Oh it's more hardcore" and "Oh I don't want a carebear loot system". These are all red herrings and straw man arguments. There is no reason why FFA should be a part of any game.

Reasons why the loot timer should be increased and/or loot should be made invisible to others until unallocated:
1. Encourages teamwork, discourages distrust among party members
2. Improves sense of community when friends aren't competing over drops, people are more open to making new friends in the game
3. Ranged players can get the loot they deserve for their contributions
4. FFA loot is an antiquated system that rewards bad teammates and punishes honest ones
5. Clicking on loot is often unresponsive and 1-2 seconds is not enough when you have someone with a better PC ready to grab the loot the moment it's open
6. It would keep combat moving if people didn't feel stressed to pick up their rares and orbs the moment they seem them. Right now we're rewarded for ditching on our teammates to grab something, possibly at a crucial moment

What are the arguments for FFA loot?
1. More hardcore? - Please, let's be serious. This is arbitrary at best and the game's difficulty and general atmosphere won't suffer from a slightly increased loot timer.
2. Carebear? - Again, this is nonsense. If it affected game difficulty then I'd say the term is appropriate, but the only thing that is added here is general fairness.

GGG once said about scrapping the "durability" system that they just felt like it wasn't fun. That's how the currency system was born. For the same reason, other games have scrapped FFA looting. It's just not fun for most gamers. The only ones who enjoy it are antisocial jerks and those with too much nostalgia. The rest of you are just pretending out of some sense of loyalty to GGG. I love GGG too. I have spent and will continue to spend money on this game. But let's not pretend something is OK when it's not.

I'm starting to get bored with these threads.
