How can GGG support PoE in the long run ?
They could still charge for expansions, be a good way to bring in some bux.

If league of legends can support itself on its micro-transactions im going to say its viable for any company, albeit the fact that its reasonable.

Have you seen a picture of Brian, and Chris's moms? those hot milfs have their ways to support their son's game.

Instead of doubting about the future of PoE, just be a decent human being, go on the cash shop and donate some money. Consider it's for the server cost. I don't need the cosmetic stuff, but it's still worth it.

Astasia:
Your cynicism is unfounded. You are questioning the entire concept of free to play, despite the fact that games like League of Legends, Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 have been tremendously successful. You are greatly underestimating the amount of people with disposable income - think of the target niche/demographic for Path of Exile: ARPG veterans and those who desire a mature, challenging and 'old-school' game. A great deal of those players are in their 20s/30s who played Diablo 1 and 2 in their heyday. Now, they have jobs and wages and salaries to spend a few dollars to enjoy a game which brings them back to the days. Those players are more than a 'very small' segment of the population. It doesn't matter that some of the players won't pay any money - they play the game and bring friends, some of whom will have disposable income. Those people with cash keep playing because their friends are still playing and will spend more money. |

" Gods of Paypal willing, I'll be purchasing a 50$ pack this week. It's like giving blood to a dear friend. And then mashing your computer mouse on him. Would anybody like some... POUNDCAKE?

They don't have a massive staff and as the game grows in popularity, and it will, I would imagine the shop will do well for itself.

" Although his post was poorly formed (a little simplistic) I to have wondered if indeed vanity items will be enough to keep this game running, specially considering everyone here is so adamant that GGG intend to target a niche audience. Will a niche audience of hardcore players buy enough vanity items consistently long term to remain a viable business prospect?? LOL is not a comparable business model. For starters its a very open casual game which has a very low barrier point for entry. This game is deliberately (at times) obtuse and wont attract anywhere near the numbers LOL gets. Secondly they also sell access to new heros, something this game wont do (clearly cause the whole genre is different) to say LOL is just vanity items is not correct. Not saying they wont, I just have my doubts. Last edited by RodHull#2035 on Jan 26, 2013, 9:27:55 PM

I consider POE like HON.
Both are the hardcore F2P of their genre and successful. Been trying to think of some ideas for the cash shop. Tough to think about what would really sell. How bout gender swaps for all the classes? Silly mob grahpic swaps, like an "Island of lost toys" look. -- Same kinda stuff Tripwire does for Killing Floor. |
