How can GGG support PoE in the long run ?

Answer is pretty simple. Refer to League of Legends business model. GGG is planing the same.

Well, now that you said it, it's ALMOST the same system (you can buy champs on LoL, but they aren't bought often). LoL survives on it's cosmetic shop. PoE just need to do the same, and I think (and hope) they'll succeed (they have more diversity).
True, nothing is free in this world. For GGG to survive long-term (assuming PoE is their only product), then it will do so because of the community support it garners.

So, when this model is described as free-to-play, I tend to think of it as "free"-to-play, meaning that the more I play it, the more inclined I am to further support the company providing it.

That doesn't mean spending thousands, or even hundreds of dollars per month, but I'd urge anyone enjoying this game who hasn't yet contributed to it, to throw a few dollars at it. $10 per month from the entire playerbase would make a substantial ongoing revenue stream.

For League you can put out a new hero and have something new to paint on that character. Creating new characters for PoE just doesn't work the same way which limits cosmetic potential.

LoL is no good comparison, they sell heroes and runes - not only visual stuff.

Dota2 is the right game to compare with, shop only sells cosmetic and, sadly PoE doesn't handle it the same, you can even find everything without paying, but it's rare (I haven't found a rare item in over 700 hours playtime, but others I know have their 20. found).

And Valve makes a ***load of money with this F2P-model ........

The only thing I would buy from the shop is extra storage space, and even that's unlikely.

GGG needs to get creative if they want to keep this game running because not everyone cares about cosmetics.

Also, don't compare LOL's model to PoE. LOL comes out with new champs every few weeks that many players buy with real money. This isn't "pay2win" but it's also NOT cosmetic. PoE has nothing similar planned.
Always remember free to play allows people to pay much more than the $60 entrance fee other models have. See diamond supporters ($1000).

shameless plug incoming:
step one: spend $5 to get 46 coins.
step two: buy 4 premium stash tab upgrades at 10 coins each

It's totally worth it!

edit: GGG is also going to expand the shop it might eventually get something you really like.

LoL and LOTRO, and DDO, and Fiesta, and Maplestory, and many many many other F2P games have been extremely Successful. Yes, most of them sell SOME P2W items in their cash shop, but these are optional purchases just as the purchases here are. They have been able to make money off of these in order to stay successful, even with only about 1/3 - 1/2 of the players making these purchases. If the player population is high enough, then sales of optional items will also be high enough...even if the items are cosmetic...

Agree!
So many people enjoying the game can throw $5 dollars at it AND spread the word about it. The game will never be Pay2win and that makes me want to spend more to support it. This is a great team and they've already done great things so I'm confident that more will come.

League of Legends sell boosts and heroes which give mechanical advantages. Those are counter to GGG's promise for no Pay2Win.

This is true, but most of their revenue comes from skins, which are cosmetic. GGG just wants to produce a wide variety of customization features for players, and that alone should keep people buying and collecting.
