Path of Exile is an incredible achievement for a first game created by a new small company. I fully believe PoE has lasting potential for years BUT I believe there are a few major issues that are both driving gamers away and preventing new gamers from becoming long term players.
I've ranked them in order of how I perceive their impact to the size of the player base. 1. Drop Rates No, I don't expect the best items in the game to fall like rain. There is a balance that needs to be maintained to keep players feeling rewarded enough to keep playing. As it is now, the drop rates are far too unrewarding. It was my perception that the drop rates were reduced at release. In beta, it felt stingy. Now it just feels like a waste of time because nothing drops. 2. De-sync Everyone knows about this issue. Those of us with a deeper technical understanding know that it is not a trivial issue. However, the perception is that GGG is not taking this as seriously as they should. It would be worth the cost to hire a highly experienced and highly paid developer to work on this issue. It is driving away potential customers. 3. Crafting It is not crafting. It is gambling. That has been a disappointment to players that imagined a crafting system. Per #1, the drop rates are too punishing to waste orbs on gambling. 4. Trading Is painful and not fun. No one gets wealthy in PoE by playing the game or by making fair trades. If you wish to get wealthy enough to afford good items, you must rip off less experienced players. That's in line with the cut-throat feel of the game, so perhaps that is what GGG intended. Please note: flipping items is done by taking advantage of a player that does not know the value of an item. So, yes, I consider that a form of ripping off other players. The list of things GGG has done well with Path of Exile is much longer than this list. It is an incredible game and one I am happy to have supported. I would like to continue to support GGG and this game, but right now I'm waiting to see if things change in some ways. I haven't found the game nearly as much fun since release. Who knows if GGG will even read this post. I have not developed a game like Path of Exile. I've been playing these types of games since Diablo 1, and I've been in software development since 1997, so that's the source of my understanding. |

The game was incredibly unbalanced in CB. 13k ES w/o a shield and 2 ES nodes lol.
That being said, some of the mechanics I liked a lot more back then. |

" This doesn't prove anything. I don't have a title, but I've spent plenty of money on the game and I'm sure I'm not alone. I've dropped about 40 bucks so far and I'd spend more but at the moment there's no need to because I don't play POE anymore. I keep checking in here from time to time to see if there are any significant improvements. |

At this point I am glad I have never supported.
Crafting doesn't exist in POE. Gambling does...and the house always wins.
Velocireptile - I LOL'ed. Which made me fart. I wish the office were empty right now :( Hardlicker - I had to push the dog out of the way so I could get to the sexy quilt. |

" Good summary of what I think. I didn't continue supporting GGG because I'm waiting to see how they fix those 4 points too, if they think, as us, that those things have to be improved. Anyway, I still have a lot of fun playing PoE ;). ♠RaGoN♦

" I agree completely. Some drops should be extremely hard to find and extremely rare, but it feels like GGG couldn't balance "keeping players grinding for hours" with "players feeling rewarded for their time". Tyrael's was the big ticket in D2. The 1 in a million item that was rare as fuck. What's the equivalent in PoE? Kaom's Heart? It would be cool if it stopped there, but then you have Soul Taker, BoR, Shav's, , Voltaxic, Aegis Aurora, Ming's, Lioneye's, 10+ other uniques, any 2 hander over 500 dps. So what's that make a 900 dps 2 hander? The equivalent to 15 Tyrael's dropping in 1 day? In 3k+ hours of PoE, I've found 2 of the 30 lottery uniques, and never found a 2h weapon over 460 dps. Even with d2's absolute shit hole for a trade system, I saw more legit Tyrael's than I do Kaom's Primacy, and that's fucking insane! Even decent items in PoE are lottery finds. I did 34 maps yesterday and was stoked as fuck that I got "The Anvil" amulet that brought me a sweet 3 Chaos Orbs. Today I can't even log in. Last edited by nGio#1658 on Jan 11, 2014, 7:21:57 PM

But your post kinda proves the point of why I don't believe increasing drop rates would make a difference in the perception of I want to find that.
What I mean is, if you only want the unique to sell it, which SO many people do. Increasing the drop rates of said items would make them less valuable. So it's a push. If you want to make a build with it that's one thing, if you want to find them to sell them, do you not understand asking for higher drop rates won't net you your big payoff? |
