The masterstroke of calling the game Hardcore

niche doesn't mean unpopular...

By virtue of going after a wider audience, GGG is no longer going after the "niche, hardcore" audience, they advertised on a mainstream, D3 fansite, so you have to expect a mainstream audience. And the launch showed they got it, with Steam, the audience was much larger than the beta audience. As was intended.

larger audience doesn't just make it not niche anymore...Steam has tons of gamers on it, there are bound to be some hardcore players there that would love this game (and there were). D3 is the sequel to D2, there are bound to be some old D2 veterans that somehow hadn't heard of this game before, and were disappointed with D3. The marketing is still staying within the niche, despite getting larger. and the game itself is still within the niche, even if they were to advertise somewhere else

I disagree. Minecraft was niche. It blew up, got ports to consoles, portables, all because it became more popular. I see POE the same way. Started niche, blew up (not as big as minecraft, but still much bigger than beta), now it's got GoTY, foreign servers (Garnia? forgot the name), all because it got more popular.

If your character has more than 0 deaths, then yes we are playing different games. You can't play only standard league and have 0 characters even in the top 15,000 and try to claim the game isn't hardcore.

That just requires time investment, nothing else. I get bored after I can't find upgrades for my characters and I have traded a hand full of times since my joining in 2011.

Investing a lot of time into games and trying to master them is what constitutes a hardcore gamer. If you have been playing since closed beta and don't invest much time in the game, that means you are a casual gamer.

What defines "a lot"?

this game is 'hardcore' because exactly why?

RNG is circumvented by trade (or RMT, so many high level players do that without any issues)

skill is non-existant

builds are fun until you realize: block is good, spell block is good, blind is good, get 4k buffer minimum to survive that one lucky 'added lightning' 'powerful crits' shot (the more the better)

play in parties as it makes game complete joke survivability-wise

the only challenge is how fast you can scam noobs and buy good gear. skill ceiling is very low and playing more is just playing more

is there ANYTHING hardcore about poe? not that it is not fun, it is/was VERY fun, but 'hardcore' is a big word and 15years ago used to mean something and that something had a lot to do with 'skill'

If you define hardcore through time investment required to progress in the game, then sure you might be able to say POE is hardcore, others may call it unrewarding though. Not my definition of hardcore is all I can say.

How do you define it? Rerolling every time you run into a progression wall in softcore and can't overcome it? Because that looks like your playstyle.

How do you know he does not impose self found/famine/delete on death on himself?

For that matter, how do you know he did not just reach lvl 77 in 2 days and will delete it tomorow and start a new run?

This is like throwing dirt at another person.

at least having 1 character on the ladder would be a start. the very bottom of the ladder on standard is level 83s, and the guy I was quoting doesn't even have one over 77 and has been playing since closed beta. That's casual.

In this case: probably. (EDIT: He has a lot of characters, I'm not so sure that label is appropriate)

In general: it's very hazy. I've seen "casual" thrown at people that spend 40 hr / wk on PoE.
