This is another of those "hateful" posts they were talking about. Hope people don't come and complain about the sandwiches you make.

The game is F2P, you don't even need to spend a cent to play it. Nobody is forcing you to play it, nobody is forcing you to use 3rd party sites and software. If it's inconvinient, tideous and unfun for you - why are you still playing?
It's got a lot of problems sure, but PoE is a niche game, catering to a niche crowd, either way you look at it. There's plenty of big titles out there that circumvent the issues you describe...and kill the fun for the rest of us that want a, ahem, "hardcore" experience.
POE free to play to appeal to a wider audience. The game launch was advertised on diablo fan sites to go after a wider audience. It won a GoTY award, even.
POE is hardly niche anymore, despite its humble beginnings.
niche doesn't mean unpopular...
By virtue of going after a wider audience, GGG is no longer going after the "niche, hardcore" audience, they advertised on a mainstream, D3 fansite, so you have to expect a mainstream audience. And the launch showed they got it, with Steam, the audience was much larger than the beta audience. As was intended.

Are we playing different games? I don't believe my connection to be good enough+desync is to off putting for me to bother with the transfer league.

I hate to break it to you, but the POE devs INTENDED for you, the player, to alt+f4.
How's that glue smell? Not alt-f4'ing is not a self imposed handicap, its common sense. I'm pretty sure no dev says :
"Lets code a game where if the players are about to lose, they can just pull the ethernet cord and avoid the death!"
"Yeah thats a great feature!"
People figure out these 'exploits' by tinkering with the software, it was not intentionally added by the devs.
Its common sense dude. You can say yes they intend for you to party, yada yada. All I'm saying is, people keep saying this game isn't hardcore, but they party up for everything becuase they can't handle it solo, and they use cheap scripts because they suck and know they are gonna die, and they trade because they don't have the determination to play self found.
Don't tell me this game isn't hardcore if you take all of the cheap/easy ways out of the hardcoreness.
If you use common sense, and play this game like a hardcore game, it IS hardcore.

larger audience doesn't just make it not niche anymore...Steam has tons of gamers on it, there are bound to be some hardcore players there that would love this game (and there were). D3 is the sequel to D2, there are bound to be some old D2 veterans that somehow hadn't heard of this game before, and were disappointed with D3. The marketing is still staying within the niche, despite getting larger. and the game itself is still within the niche, even if they were to advertise somewhere else

I'm still trying to find an article quote, but in this interview, Chris Wilson defends Alt+F4 as a legit strat for POE

Serious question, why do you allow disconnecting to save from death in hardcore? I find this very lame and it allows less cautious play, since you always have a get out of jail free card. Basically by allowing this you are encouraging this type of play style and I don't get it.

I replied in more detail on the forum about this a couple of months ago (sorry not having a link handy) but the short answer is that we greatly prefer it because it lets us have more interesting fights/monsters. It's an intentional and core part of Path of Exile's design.

Maybe my explanation in the Raptr Q&A isn't optimal (I answered over 100 questions rapidly), but I stand by our reasoning that causes us to allow people to drop instantly.
We want our fights to have large swings of damage and to cause a rush of adrenaline in the player. If the game didn't allow you to drop instantly then we'd have to dumb down the fights so much. We've tried it.
In addition, it means that we're able to make hard boss fights that players can attrition if they choose to. If we had to design the act bosses so that players needed to kill them in one go without dying then they would be pushovers.

I played hardcore d2 for many years. I pressed alt-F4 once every few days on average. I cannot imagine an Action RPG design where it's blocked. We discussed this heavily when designing PoE. I'd love to find a solution (because I agree it's bad in principle), but being able to "Nope" out of situations drastically changes a lot about the game.
It was intentionally added to PoE, though the inspiration (the presence of this tactic in D2) was likely an accident.

If your character has more than 0 deaths, then yes we are playing different games. You can't play only standard league and have 0 characters even in the top 15,000 and try to claim the game isn't hardcore.
That just requires time investment, nothing else. I get bored after I can't find upgrades for my characters and I have traded a hand full of times since my joining in 2011.
