Staff Templar Build?

If it's not a good idea for Templars to be split between spells and melee, why choose a Templar over a Marauder or a Witch?
Could you guys give a newbie some help? I'm quite new to this game and I'm trying out this build, but I'm not really sure I know what I'm doing. I just got the +20% Armor and +10% Elemental Resistance, but that also gave me +20% Energy Shield which I'm not sure how to capitalize on since right now it just raised my shield from 12 to 14, lol. Anyway, take a look and see if anything is off:

Passive Tree

Items and Skill Gems

The idea was to maximize AoE damage and use Infernal Blow for single targets. I was thinking about Blood Magic down the line, but I have no mana problems right now.

You can't have both - either it is spells or it is hp/melee

This is not true it is just more difficult to make a melee/caster but templar or shadow would be the easiest choices for a class as you wouldn't have to spend as many points getting the nodes you need
Grunker, i would invest your point like this

More resistance, more life, even more dmg if you rely on infernal blow for single targets.
Go for blood magic, but u shoudlr eally get that magic resistance and addintional life and hp regen near marauders tree.
Block is weak on staffs, and imo, it makes more bad than good.

Blood magic in hp oriented build is way to go. I spam all skills now, and i had granite flask drop, so, it made me get about 90% physical resistance with all skill useed, and this is gonna get better once i get bonus endurance charges. As for dps, sweep handle group of enemies, but life oh hit is a must when jumping into a laaarge group. As for single targets, infernal blow with elemental makes uniques and boosses easy. And if i may add, i didnt put a single elemental dmg passive skill yet. Im on cruel difficulty now.

Is it just me or are staffs in general just way too slow? Also whats the deal with there not being a big staff section in the passive tree like there is with all the other weapons?
i agree i am currently a lvl41 templar and using a staff build, seems like i need AS gloves and other AS gear and some AS skills for it to be fast clearing, or else its kinda slow progress.
Tried another build- taking a fair bit of crit, elemental resist, fire damage, and HP. Thoughts? This will be my first 40 points
