General Discussion - Freeing inactive usernames? - Forum

No noone would risk losing their names. I edited my post while you where typing probably so you didnt get to see my clarification. In D3 if you want to be named "John" for example you type this name in the character creation screen and it looks normal to you and everyone else while chatting etc. However your name in a technical sense isn't "John" it's something like "John364", some random number behind to guarantee that any person that want to be called John can be. GGG has said multiple times that there will not be any form of character wipe in the future. This also includes "freeing" usernames of any sorts. I haven't played for nearly 7 months in Open Beta, thats no reason to delete my user names I've kept for so long time. PoE is a game that can keep you entertained for quite a while but it's only natural to take a break every once in a while. Maybe just for a few weeks or maybe for a few months but in any case you do not want to come back to see your username being taken away from you. I've personally never had trouble finding a username that suits me, got 20 characters overall and I'm happy with every single name. People simply need to get more creative.
