Freeing inactive usernames?
" I don't think the inactive players who would have their characters unnamed would be on the forums to begin with. |

Unless it becomes an issue of database bloat for GGG, I feel that deleting characters or accounts is generally an iffy thing. I pretty much understand both sides here: It can be frustrating to not get a name that you want, but knowing that your "stuff" isn't deleted, or is still there whenever you come back, is a strong incentive to eventually return to the game, too.
There is another aspect: While a good and desirable name you want may currently be reserved by an inactive player and is "rotting", most people who want that name still wouldn't get it even if GGG expired inactive characters after x months. If there's 10,000 people who want "Conan", and GGG freed up the name, 9999 players still wouldn't get it. ONE person would be happy, and ONE person (the person who had it before) may at some point get upset over it. For everyone else, nothing would change. " Yeah, they normally do contact the name owner in question themselves. Thought I stressed this out in my suggestion. However support might not want to free up some of the names because of their naming policy infringement? Last edited by Nightmare90#4217 on Nov 7, 2013, 8:36:16 PM

Is this the new flavor of the month debate? This is like the third thread I've seen about this today.
Arbitrarily deleting characters or removing their handles without their owners' permission, regardless of their level or inactivity, account or otherwise, is a terrible idea. The better solution is simple and has been said time and time again: Get creative. I once took a several month break to return to a message in my in box from one of the GGG staff asking me if another player could have one of my handles. The message was a few months old so I did not bother to respond, but the answer would have been "no." I had used that handle before and I intended, and did in fact, use it again. I still have a bunch of once used CB handles that I will definitely use again sooner or later, so it worries me to think that in the future GGG won't even bother asking the next time some random person decides that they are entitled to their name. I especially hope GGG never does anything like this because this would directly contradict what they've said in the past about reserving names being a benefit of being in closed beta. |

Inactive accounts which have never purchased stuff from the store, and are > level 30.
I think that's fair. "You can't bash someone else's shitty taste in music when you listen to 'grindcore'" -TheWretch̢

I'd be pissed if I went inactive and had my character names wiped. I've been playing for right at a year, and taken a couple of 1 month breaks. I don't have any names anyone would want. I name my characters based on what they do, or if they are a main in a specific league. If i had to go log into each character to figure out what to rename it, i'd be rather irritated.

" you mean "and are < level 30"? as in less than? not greater than? Wiping names over 30 makes no sense??? |

" Actually, I was just thinking that some kind of permanent handle ownership microtransaction could be useful if they do decide to go that route. |

" Nah. This beast of a topic will never die. It rises every so often, either as a necro'ed thread, or with the advent of a new one. Earlier this week, on another thread on this same topic, I posted that I got Amra_The_Lion with NO problem, just like that. Plenty of existing character names from various media out there, if you can't make up one of your own, or, just make one of your own. But GGG isn't gonna wipe somebody else's character, just because you want their name. ='[.]'= =^[.]^= basic (happy/amused) cheetahmoticon: Whiskers/eye/tear-streak/nose/tear-streak/eye/
