Orb Candy, Diablo 3, and Sending a Message

Just out of curiosity I went to GGG's website to see if they had any women listed on their team. Of the 21 people named on the website only one (1) seems to be female (Samantha Wilson).

I guess that's why shit like this happens and why they (like most people here) can't even seem to understand why it is an issue or bother to change it.

Why am I even surprised?
You make the assumption they are sex slaves, but I don't understand why. Art is open to interpretation, and you interpretative it as the women chained to your health/mana are sex slaves.

My interpretation is that women chained to your health is your heart, where as the women chained to your mana is your soul.

Frankly, I find the conclusions you came to to be disgusting, but each is entitled to their own opinion. Regardless, I don't see why conclusions you came to should be justification to change the UI.
Male or female, sex slave or just orb candy degredation.

Whatever you want to call it. It satisfies me even more knowing how much it offends you.

I don't care if its women or men being objectified. People objectify themselves all the time, flaunt it if you got it types, it's just a part of human nature. Get over it, we're a very short lived species.

Offended people are worse than reality tv. Total nonsense.

Worst thing about living today? Offended people.

In the olden days you could just wear a necklace of skulls of people you killed and if anyone had an issue with it or called it objectifying people you could just add their skull to your collection.

Modern day? Total nonsense.
I don't even really notice the art on the globes, because I'm too busy actually watching the content of the globes and weep when they're empty. For all I care you could put hairy gnomes next to them and I wouldn't care (and neither should anyone else).

I do feel bad for the naked man statues in A3 though. I guess the same person who stole most of the Templar pants must have visited the temples too.
oh wow, talk about knowing what battles to pick.

with so many real women's problems in the world you think its better to waste your time & energy trying to change a minor part of the UI of an indie (even if successful) game?

why dont you use this time in more palpable actions than venting frustration in a forum to a crowd you KNOW will be hostile to you.

this shows more about you than you seem to realize.

Can't say I'm surprised either, but thanks for digging that tidbit up. I don't envy Samantha Wilson, especially when threads like this come up.

Sexism is a cultural phenomenon, a matter of ideology and teachable world-view, in a way which violence is not

Proof?!

exposure to violent media, such as videogames, does not appear to cause violent behavior - I think we can all agree to that. I feel pretty comfortable stating that no one in this thread has thrown on a burlap sack, picked up a tree branch and started beating homeless people, regardless of what exists in the game.

....and apperantly nobody walks around and enslaves or rapes women because of games

How is it an acceptable response "go play hello kitty online"? Or "I like seeing women in chains"?

By living in a free world! Everyone can look away from thinks he don't like and everyone can watch stuff he likes! Get over it and stop trying to force your world view upon us!

And that's the problem: the UI is a continuation of this idea that causal sexism, degrading and objectifying individuals because of their sex is okay. That sentiment is echoed over and over again in this thread: "if you're offended, it's because you're a woman" clearly means that the UI is offensive to women, while accomplishing the magnificent irony of being dismissive of all dissenting men.

I don't aggree with the sentence "if you're offended, it's because you're a woman". I'd say if you're offended you have some serious issues with either your ego, your religion, your education or with your girlfriend.

There do seem to be some good faith (or close to it) arguments for keeping the UI: it's a deliberate design choice meant to be part of a dark/gothic fantasy setting. But that raises the question: why does it have to be naked women? What about enemies from the game? An exile and a gemling? A squid and a zombie?

Because it looks good. And first of all you have to have a convincing argument to change it before you can decide what it should be changed into.

If the UI is such a small element of the game, what harm is there in changing it to make it better for players (and potential players) who aren't comfortable with it? "It doesn't matter, leave it alone" implies that it does matter to you. If you don't care, why can't you just accept that some people do?

Oh, trust me, I care! I didn't care before but know I definitely want to keep it the way it is! Because I don't want to live in a world, where some ideologists just have to whine about some least important stuff to push us back in a 19th-centrury-mentality! Artistic freedom must not yield in front of ideological and religious fanatics or we will loose not only or art but in the next step our freedom of speech and our freedom of thought.

"
DrunkardCain wrote:
And yes, it's a free society, etc., and the developers should be allowed to design the UI however they choose. I don't really disagree with that argument. But players should also be allowed to voice their problems with the UI (and their support of it!), without being subjected to this level of abuse.

If the problem is really to big for you stop playing. Freedom is not a one-way-ticket!

I care about lots of problems, not just this one! Funny thing that, I am capable of caring about more than one thing at a time! The hostility of this forum crowd is a direct result of bullshit like the orb statues being the norm in gaming for decades.

That whoosh sound you heard when you made your post was that last bit going right over your head.

man...
you came for the shining, white armor, but you stayed for the brawl.

you just want to argue and, of course, choose the best battle ground possible: a gaming forum on the interwebs.

have fun, i´m stepping out of the fray, a thousand internet points to you ;)
