Hello, so today I finished my first play through on normal difficulty in standard league, overall I enjoyed it and put in 30 hours of my time into the game.
I was looking forward to entering this harder difficulty cruel, and being new to the game decided to ask a few people in global chat about my build and gear etc, to see if I was in a good position to progress. Sadly every person I spoke to, told me my build was very bad and it would be easier to just start a new character as continuing into cruel would be a screaming pain of agony, this kind of annoyed me a little and got me wondering... Granted I did not expect my first character to be perfect or anything, and knew I probably had made some mistakes along the way through. But start a new character?, repeat everything I had just done from level 1? the same exact quests and areas?. To me it just feels as if everyone basically is saying your first play through is to simply farm a currency for future characters. But if thats the case then what is the overall point of this game?....to constantly make new characters and repeat the same content over and over? Not trying to rant (sure its how it sounds), but I am just kind of trying to get my head around it and whether I should make a new character or just try with the harder difficulties. Also side question, to what purpose and reasoning is there to create a character on nemesis league or hardcore league? Thanks |

I would say the point of the game is to have fun.
However, to answer some of your unasked questions: Many people screw up their first character and if you even get to Cruel with it, then I would say it is a success. This character is mainly for learning about the game. People love doing different things. Some people reroll many characters over and over again to test different builds. Some people grind and grind towards 100. It basically comes down to what you enjoy doing. When you really look at it, numerous games are about doing the same thing over and over. Also, in the higher difficulties, you are doing everything you just did over and over, but it is harder. ARPGs tend to be very grindy and many have the same content over and over, but with increasing difficulties. |

the point of PoE is about grinding. Grinding xp, grinding builds, grinding gear, grinding wealth, grinding again and again. I love that, like some others, but some people don't.

Ignore them. Go forward with your character and see how well you do. If you get good item drops that can compensate for a less than ideal build. Don't let other peoples uninformed criticisms determine how you play or whether you play at all. They could be trolling you, for all you know. If you're strong enough to finish normal on your first play through that's not too shabby.
If you get destroyed in the next difficulty repeatedly, learn why, and make adjustments, go run earlier areas for gear upgrades. Should have half a dozen or so respec points from quests and some orbs of regret, so you can make significant changes without resorting to a full do over. May I ask what type of character it is, what your goals are for it? Like for instance, bow ranger physical damage build, or 2handed maul marauder build? main attack skill used? "When you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail."

The point of this game is that it isn't WoW. OP wants to play WoW, so go play it instead.
