Day 7 and counting: Cannot get past character select screen: "failed to connect to instance "
There appear to be some anecdotal reports regarding your particular router and port 6112 (why this arbitrary port is significant I do not know)
Have you tried updating your router firmware? "The problem is there ARE secure netcodes" -- Pewzor

" Hey there, I'm sorry to hear that you're having these troubles, but with a trace route like that, I don't think you're going to have much luck playing on this wireless connection. You can try changing the channel the wireless broadcasts on, or even making a home made 'dish'/'signal booster' which may might help. http://lifehacker.com/296367/boost-your-wireless-signal-with-a-homemade-wifi-extender |

I am right next to the wireless router - and signal strength shows full on my laptop.
Do you mean the wireless is the issue here - for the "failed to connect" issue I have, and not related to ports etc? I ask because, I can take the wireless out of the equation and plug in the broadband modem using cable to the laptop directly and check? Let me know, thanks. |

Alright what I'll get you to do is this:
1) Setup your network such that your secondary computer functions as a gateway for your primary computer. Thus the topology would be this: [Primary Computer] -> [Secondary Computer] -> [Router] -> (Internet) 2) Install Wireshark on your secondary computer and again run the same tests we performed earlier except that you'll be performing the capture on the secondary machine rather than your primary. (The tests being the telnet connection to both useast.battle.net and the PoE server) 3) Again, once the capture is complete upload the results. This will conclude once and for all if the problem is your router or something on your local machine. "The problem is there ARE secure netcodes" -- Pewzor

I have removed the router from the setup now, so no wireless, router config etc now.
My laptop is now connected to the broad band modem by ethernet cable. Just to reiterate, This is the exact same laptop on which I have played POE with no issues, and no setting changes has been done on this one. I still get the "failed to connect to instance" after char select. I still get the same message when trying telnet. I am going to call my provider again as I strongly suspect they might just have blocked the ports (and their call-desk person just doesnt know enough to respond to me with a list etc) as a cheap way to throttle bandwidth etc. Here is MTR report: |------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | WinMTR statistics | | Host - % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last | |------------------------------------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------| | 192.168.1.1 - 0 | 259 | 259 | 1 | 1 | 71 | 2 | |ABTS-TN-dynamic-001.0.164.122.airtelbroadband.in - 1 | 251 | 249 | 25 | 30 | 142 | 41 | |ABTS-TN-Static-081.227.95.61.airtelbroadband.in - 0 | 259 | 259 | 25 | 29 | 100 | 31 | | 61.95.240.129 - 0 | 259 | 259 | 24 | 29 | 124 | 34 | | 125.21.167.113 - 0 | 259 | 259 | 58 | 71 | 180 | 58 | | 125.21.167.105 - 0 | 259 | 259 | 58 | 62 | 154 | 63 | | AES-Static-118.36.144.59.airtel.in - 0 | 259 | 259 | 57 | 62 | 157 | 71 | | 36351.sgw.equinix.com - 0 | 259 | 259 | 57 | 61 | 148 | 64 | | ae5.dar01.sr03.sng01.networklayer.com - 0 | 259 | 259 | 57 | 61 | 148 | 62 | | po1.fcr01.sr03.sng01.networklayer.com - 35 | 109 | 71 | 57 | 65 | 186 | 60 | |216.12.203.90-static.reverse.softlayer.com - 0 | 259 | 259 | 58 | 62 | 145 | 63 | |________________________________________________|______|______|______|______|______|______| WinMTR v0.92 GPL V2 by Appnor MSP - Fully Managed Hosting & Cloud Provider Last edited by MildlyClever#2548 on Nov 5, 2013, 8:15:19 PM

Wait, are you saying you have both a router and a modem? Two seperate devices? And if so what is the make/model of your modem?
(Note: Ignore the GGG staff's remark about packet loss; if packet loss was the cause for being unable to establish a TCP connection then you wouldn't be doing anything internet related) "The problem is there ARE secure netcodes" -- Pewzor Last edited by Emjayen#1133 on Nov 5, 2013, 8:32:27 PM

I got a beetel 220BX ADSL2+ Modem, and netgear router.
I have taken the router out now - and connected through the modem. I have called the ISP again and asked them to give a call back from their tech team (their support is swift - have been using them for almost 10 years now), which I should get in the next couple of hours. My gutfeel is that the ports are blocked at the ISP level. |
