Day 7 and counting: Cannot get past character select screen: "failed to connect to instance "

"

not sure if this helps:

http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/

I used this site now, clicked use current IP, and put in port 6112 and clicked check.

says "port 6112 is closed".

That's fine; that site is just for testing if a service running on your network is reachable (thus it's only important for incomming connections)

I downloaded wireshark.

In Interface I get TWO:

LAN with IP 0.0.0.0

wireless Network Connection with a wierd IP fe80::ad96 etcetera.

Disable all unused network adapters:

Control Panel -> Network And Sharing -> Change Adapter settings

and for each adapter you are not using right-click -> Disable

You should be left with a single enabled adapter (which presumably is your wireless)

After you have done this see if your problem is resolved. If not, proceed with the capture task described earlier.

done.

file name is: capture for POE port 6112 for Emjayen.pcapng (217.23KB)

I ran the telnet for POE IP first, and it returned response within seconds, then ran the battlenet one which took a while.

Thanks again for this.

cheers.

P.S: I tried disabling all adapters except the wireless one yesterday, and no again. Still getting the "Failed to connect to instance"

I'm quite convinced it's some security software on your local machine. Try this:

Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services

Stop the following two services:

Base Filtering Engine
Windows Firewall

stopped both services, started up POE,

same situation still - cant get past character select screen :(

P.S: this is the same laptop from which I play POE since I installed POE.
man this sucks i see ggg has helped u out a lot good thing they have the tech area... but if u have a micro transaction problem they respond in like 5 mins
well to be fair, it does appear to be a local problem for me.

The issue is not being able to find out what is causing it which is the problem.

I checked my router settings dozens of times, and nothing is blocked/etc, so hoping that something does show up in the wireshark log thingie which throws light on it.
Do you have any other computers connected to the network we could use for testing?

EDIT: Also, have you applied any port-forwarding or port-triggering entries in the router at all? (I assume you've disabled the content-filtering/packet-inspection/firewall features)

post forwarding / triggering are empty - tried adding all the ports listed in other posts, still same result, so back to keeping them empty.

I unchecked / disabled port scan and DOS protection , changed NAT filtering from secured to open. Still same result :(

I have an old PC connected to the same router+modem (PC connected via cable to router) -

Ran both telnet commands - same result as from the laptop.

The PC doesn't have POE - it is too old anyway, and has win XP and very little RAM etc. The PC has ZoneAlarm, AVG Antivirus - whereas the laptop has symantec Endpoint protection etc.

Guess POE cant be played when I am in India - as I really dont see any other option? Thanks a lot for all the checks though.

I am still mildly surprised that a game wanting to be "mainstream" doesnt really plug'n'play whereas I never had this problem with any other games
