Perpetus in City of Sarn
"OK, I'll give one possible rebuttal a go. A) He's not that hard. My standard guy didn't see him as a particularly fatal encounter and I basically had to face tank him (usually) using substandard gear. B) People avoid him because risk/reward. I'd much rather they dialed up the reward than dialed down the risk. As it sits right now what's the problem? The ladder climbers all breeze right by him. Those of us seeking other goals kill him. I don't trade. I don't group. My comments reflect that.

What I did was run around him till he throw 2~3 traps, then proceed to bash his face. Hopefully his EK won't take me out instantly.

So I just fired up the game to find this boss based on this thread, and I have no idea what people are complaining about.
I always 100% explore every map, so I know I've killed this guy before. Playing as a dual wielding sword user with dual strike as my main skill, armor/evasion hybrid with more evasion and Ondar's Guile. He's never killed me, I've never tried to avoid him, hell I didn't even remember he existed, he's such a non-issue for me. There are plenty I remember for whatever reason (the 3 ribbons in Solaris, Kole in Lunaris, Gneiss in Old Fields, that huge damned statue in the Marketplace, etc) and this guy isn't one of them. I'm almost done with Act 2 Merci, so maybe the Merci version of Perpetus will be something worth remembering Support a free Hong Kong.
I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use. -Galileo Galilei |

Perpetus builds up Traps just like a player, so he can quickly drop three traps at your feet if he catches you unaware.
If you don't see him coming he's extremely dangerous (such as if he is mixed into a pack of blues). If you do see him coming you can usually avoid him by long range kiting or simply closing to melee. Once you close with him he tends to default to basic attacks rather than EK or Trap spam. Admittedly Bear Trap does CRAZY damage, and it's definitely not always possible to avoid it (for instance if he drops one behind a house where you can't see it). And once you get grabbed you can't usually get out without a movement skill... Which many people don't use. IGN - PlutoChthon, Talvathir

"I still distinctly remember the first time I set foot in Normal Act 2 just after Merveil in Closed Beta. Up until that point I was building around a non-AoE skill; single target all day long. Suddenly I was surrounded by dozens of little monkeys, and when you can kill one max per attack, they aren't easy. I actually died multiple times to Normal monkeys. Then I got a clue, used AoE, and steamrolled them like everyone else does. Perpetus' Bear Trap isn't the only reason to use a movement skill in this game, it helps for all sorts of things like getting to Necromancers quickly or escaping bad surrounds. But Perpetus is a "check yourself" moment; if you're foolhardy enough not to be running some kind of movement skill when you face him (or Immortal Call, that works too), he laughs in your face. And good for him. Perpetus is hard only if you're overly rigid about running skill combinations that aren't optimal. When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted. I actually have little to no difficulty with Perpetus without running any movement skills. But that's neither here no there.
the problem is when you get trapped in a way you can't avoid or are caught unaware. I personally have trouble seeing traps when thrown or when they're just standing because the colors bleed together too much for me to see. I'm sure I'm not alone. Or those great moments when he's dropped a trap behind an object that blocks LoS. IGN - PlutoChthon, Talvathir

" JSYK, traps CAn be destroyed aswell. Not sure about the mechanics regarding that though. But in the end, Perp isn't really a big threat. He is a gear check that is optional, unlike Piety who isn't optional, and he provides you the ability to go "Can I deal with high physical spell dmg" and get an answer |

" Arc is probably your best bet, since it targets them automatically (even if you're desynched). They have 1hp. Face it, all of your suggestions are worse than this idea:

best thing about perpetus is him sometimes waiting beside you after he beartrapped you and after 3 seconds when your life has gone down a bit shoots you using his ethereal knife skill.
i usually try to avoid him in city of sarn - runs because the anarchy fireball summoner witch i played yesterday only has 1k life+es and no escape spell from his traps like lightning warp. but yesterday he somehow found me in mercyless and i have to say it was worth it: 1 exalt, a 5 white 5l 5s evasion chest and a chisel dropped from him and his surrounding blue mobs. it was like i somehow pushed a luck button which however leaves me with a mixed feeling as i play 2-4 hours a day in the evening and never found an exalt since closed beta and just one 5 link chest. it's like working for a company for less than average money, being happy but getting a raise after 5 years leaves you sad, thinking: this should have happened 4 years ago. age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill!

Late on the reply, but thought I was step in and see the other replies here.
First, on my gear. Not everyone has an endless supply of mats and funds to have the best gear. I saw someone posted something about 25k armor, and honestly, the only time I have seen 25k armor is with the best gear in the game, or damn near it. On one particular alt I have, I have picked up IR, every health and armor node possible so far, and almost every piece of gear is armor/evasion, and has health on it, so I really can't see how what my armor rating is, considering I am geared the best I can get atm for my level, has anything to do with it. If encounters are based around having completely uber gear, and I cant get it, then maybe THAT'S what needs to be looked at instead of the encounters. I try to craft, I try to buy what I can, but the bottom line is, trade channel blows, and crafting is a crap shoot, so one cannot expect awesome gear on all characters by Cruel. If you pull Perp by himself, he might not be bad, but, when he's surrounded by magic archers that you can't reach because you're being trapped, well that's a mechanic issue. If you can't reach them, you're not leeching health at the rate you need to survive. Anyway, I digress. The few people who are saying he's cake probably farms for amazing gear or has the funds to gear their alts to the gills, because most people don't have that kind of luck with him.
