Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.
LMAO... At people at the very few people who keep preaching about loot 'OPTIONS'.
It ain't gonna happen. :D Your option is play with friends/solo. That is an options. Use it. Anyways... I think a simple fix can solve the current confusion over loot timers. Simply remove the NAME and timer from drops for the people the timer is dropped for. But, keep the timer for eveveryone esle so the can see it/wait for it. That way, who ever gets the timed drop will never, ever know... They can no longer cry NINJA because there is no way to tell that drop was theirs. No one knows because there is NO name. |

We initially announced that looting is free-for-all in Path of Exile. Players would be able to see and pick up any items that dropped.
It's important to us that Path of Exile has a cut-throat feel where players are not only competing against monsters, but also their fellow players. We do not feel it is an option to arbitrarily hide items from players who have not been allocated them. As we saw here and here, many players really objected to this. Several legitimate problems with free-for-all looting were raised: - Ranged players are unable to get to the items in time. - Items might just get scooped up by one player with substantially lower latency than the other players. Over the past few months we've thought long and hard about this topic, and have come up with a system that we feel captures the cut-throat feel that we're trying to go for, but helps mitigate the valid complaints. We're proposing the following system: - All white text items are free-for-all. - All magic/rare/unique/currency/gem items are allocated to a nearby player for a very small amount of time. - All players can see the item, and a countdown of how much time remains until it's available to anyone is shown. - The allocation time is intended to be very small (enough time to compensate for a little latency, reaction time and travel distance). We're thinking a base time of something in the order of 1 second when standing next to the item. - The time would be increased by the time it takes for the character to run to the item. An item allocated to a ranged player might unallocate after two seconds, for example. - It's important that the time is low enough that the player can only get the item if they are paying attention and make an effort to immediately grab it. - The allocation times can be lower or non-existent in hardcore or cut-throat leagues. Players who wanted an allocated looting system will hopefully be happy that this system mitigates item loss due to latency and travel distance. Players who wanted a free-for-all looting system will hopefully be pleased - with this system they can take any item they want if the allocated player is not paying attention to the drops. This is a concept based on feedback only. It's not locked in stone, but we like the direction it's going in. What do you guys think about this suggestion? Please don't just post "allocated sucks", or "I won't play if it's free-for-all". |

" That's outright slandering. Next time you make such assumptions please read the whole thread. " Now, sorry but, THIS, is a ridiculous argument. But hey, i've heard worse than yours: "Add a respec option, whoever doesn't want to respec can just choose not to! We don't want to take anything away from the hardcore-ness of your game!" "I hate the RNG! Add orbs for standard mods! Don't want to take anything out of the game, whoever likes RNG will use chaos!" "Add a difficulty option! If you want the game to be challenging it can stay that way for you, add it and everyone will be happy!" I hope you understand why these arguments are no arguments at all. FFA loot adds to the feeling of the game. You go out with your (trusted) comrades in battle, slay monsters and share the loot! That's the idea! And some people actually enjoy it. Separate/Instanced loot, except the unrealistic and dumb fact that you are the only one looting a monster and the items that drop before you are invisible to others, makes you feel like you are playing in a bubble, which is one of the worst things in an online game. Totally hated the system in D3, it was dull at best. Finally, it's not that hard to communicate with people and find some trusted allies to party with. That's what a friend list is for. You will be surprised at how many decent and respectful players are playing the game. It will also make partying more enjoyable for you as well, instead of feeling you are partying with bots. PS: The guy above me spams this quote in several threads, irrelevant to loot, for no reason. Please check his history and do something about it. " What your trying to argue here has been refuted many times. Your using examples of stuff that would break the game for ALL players. Obviously no one thinks the game difficulty should be changed like orbs or respecs. This issue is about a competitive feature that is ONLY forced onto players in public games. Its only a playstyle. People avoid it right now and NOT using it DOESN'T change the game. IT DOES NOT MAKE THE GAME EASIER TO NOT PLAY FFA. IT DOES NOT GIVE YOU MORE ITEMS. IT DOES NOT BREAK THE GAME. People who want a stupidly easy game will jump into a private party like everyone else. No loot competition and a game so easy you can close your eyes and play half asleep. Argue the issue itself. Stop using strawman Standard Forever

" Pretty much... Playing last night i snatched up an a Alc Orb. The timer was not mine but i still got the drop. The guy whos name was on the timer says. "damn, i really needed that alc".. And never said anything else. Five minutes later i decided to give him the 3 that where stacked characters inventory. Basically told him this is for you and the extras where for not bugging about it. He was happy as pig in shit. We played together for a few more hours and he kept trying to offer me things in return which i kindly refused. Then an alch orb dropped with his name on it again and he walked away from it saying `All yours bro`. A big problem is people don't know how to talk to people or get what they want. Not everyone is a ninja/loot whore like some people think. Most of us are just playing the game as is. Being nice or simply NOT ANNOYING can work wonders. " Thanks for storing that little gem of information mobutu. I could have swore that FFA lovers just enjoyed the playstyle and weren't out to steal everything in sight. Guess here is a perfect example of what they normally claim NOT to be. So loot options effects you because you would have less easy prey? Wow. Standard Forever

" The beauty of it is I don't have to prove you wrong since you do nothing at all besides preach your very extreme opinions. Thats ok because there are plenty of other FFA supporters that actually try to use arguments. I can spend my time proving them wrong and just ignore you. Yay. " Quoted for being awesome ;) Standard Forever Last edited by iamstryker#5952 on Mar 15, 2013, 10:40:32 AM
