Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.

one of my main concerns is how the game will turn into "grab what you can fit into your inventory and hope it's useful". before a boss fight or anything else, i have to empty my small inventory so that i have a fighting chance to grab gear. some people like the system, but i think it's unfair to the slower paced, casual players that like to take their time.

you can get a group of people and tell them the rules, but you can't control people. a better idea is to give a loot system option when creating a group like someone said earlier.
I'd vote for longer timers.

Also... not real sure why 1 of the most valuable items in the entire game is 100% free for all to begin with. (6Link). 5link is also more valuable than 95% of the stuff on timers.

Thats the biggest glaring issue I see with it.

P.S. there are certain programs that name needs not be mentioned that is already availible to private and will soon become public. I'm sure the people that need to know, know this is comming but figure i'd mention it.

In any case, I have stated my opinions about the option to configure your party a bit more and not shove down our throat an outdated system by force (yet keep it to satisfy those people who think messy gameplay is hardcore). Hopefully GGG will address this issue and not go with the path a lot of modern game devs go with (dumb down, totally remove ffa, ect.)

for all the offended 'hardcore' players, messy mechanics does not mean harder game - it means lazy design or limited funds/technology. (For example warcraft 2 or 1 was way harder than 3 thanks to the fact you got NO KEYBINDS, or diablo 1 was a bit harder than 2 cause d2 had more messy controls)

So far what is happening to the game is instead of inventing new ideas it re-uses the older and out-dated ones.

THAT ^
while game is trying to be hardcore it fails to deliver an engaging gameplay thanks to the fact you think about what is going to drop rather focus on the action

anyway, sorry for double post. im out of this endless post. hope ggg will give a damn about the normal players that want more control over their gameplay without damaging the hardcore players that loves fighting the game rather the mobs

Some more feedback on looting; i did a series of maps yesterday with a group of public people. It was non-FFA and everyone was, as far as i could tell, respecting loot drops, maps going to the map opener, etc. It was actually pretty fun except for on thing, the marauder kept jacking every single white item that dropped.

That 6 socket armor? That 4L? That multicolored 3L? Hell, that 5L-6L that might have dropped but i didn't notice because he grabbed it so fast and there is so much spam and white garbage all over the floor?

It was annoying because i can't get close to mobs in HC as a ranger without serious risk. Nor am i going to bitch about it to him because those whites are open to everyone and i would probably do the same. So that puts me in an awkward situation where i'm at a disadvantage because of the class i play and the only solution is to solo once again...

Not good for the game. I'll say it once again, the only thing that is stopping me from buying stash tabs is FFA looting.

My personal opinion is that is completely fair.

Ask yourself, who is in the most danger? You or him? Who is more likely to die?

Risk VS Reward. You stay safe far away while he is forced to get in their face.

I do not think the system should be changed for the sake of players choosing a certain play style. You chose ranged, he chose melee. Those choices should make a difference in the way you play and what you get for playing that way, or the idea of "choice" is pointless.

We can barely tell the difference between classes as is with the way the skill tree works (Marauder mages and Witch tanks are easy to make). Taking away any more differences would be bad imo.

Your argument more or less boils down to this: because he plays a style that is more risky, he should get rewarded for it.

The problem is that even if it were true (he has a higher chance of dying) it doesn't serve as a good metric for determining how rewards should be split between players. Just because he's more at risk doesn't mean he's contributing anything to the group, or has greater value than a ranged player. That marauder could be hypothetically doing absolutely nothing (little damage, not stunning, not double cursing, etc.) but he gets all the whites just because he has a higher chance of dying? That doesn't really make sense.

Also, it isn't as cut and dry as; he's closer to mobs means he has a higher chance of dying. You're survivability has more to do with build and itemization. The maruader could very easily be leaping in and out of dangerous encounters, doing little to nothing and building extremely tanky. His chances of dying are much less than a glassier ranged character that is focused on large amounts of DPS. Yet once again, he gets all the whites due to his leap mobility and paying greater attention to items than killing mobs? Once again, that doesn't really make sense.

The correct analogy to use here would be (how much you're contributing to the group) vs. reward and as of right now, it's skewed towards melee would aren't necessarily at any more risk than a ranged.
They really need to do something about this loot system soon.

The environment is so toxic and hostile it's pointless to even join public groups in most cases. I just got kicked out of 3 public groups in a row WHILE i had my stream on and called a ninja when i never even touched an item.

This loot system is creating more of a headache than it is creating a fun community. I've had it with all this drama and time spent bickering and discussing loot when you could be making new friends to play and have fun with.

Leveling new characters can be hard sometimes when you have an odd spec (yes, some people enjoy trying out new specs!) and your friends won't always be there to help you or even want to. This is when you need the public groups.

Please stop ignoring this issue, it's becoming less and less fun to even try branching out to new players with the current loot system.
My Supporter Pack list compensates for my small penis.
They are currently designing a new loot system.

Well said. I received a closed beta key long ago but never even downloaded the game because I learned that PoE has no instanced loot option. My friends and I quit the otherwise-wonderful Diablo II many years ago ENTIRELY because its lack of instanced (or otherwise fully allocated) loot was causing friction between us, and we vowed NEVER to play another game without it.

I pleaded and pleaded on the forums for GGG to add an instanced loot option, finally got tired of being ignored, announced my permanent departure, and left. In a weak moment, I returned today in the desperate hope that something might have been done by now. Alas, I see that GGG has resorted to censorship, banning new threads on the subject, yet they've neither taken nor promised concrete action.

I am again deeply disappointed. In all other regards, this looks like it would have been an immensely fun game. :-(
