Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.

I really like this looting system, and yet people still complain about drops being taken! lol

That would solve the problem, because then if your Bow Ranger ninjas a rare 2-hand sword from me while I'm on my 2-hand sword Duelist, I will kill you, take it off your corpse (along with the rest of your currency items), and not feel the slightest bit bad about it, because you're a tool and deserve to die for annoying me.

Question: why do you want to kill the poor ranger if he picks up an item that's laying on the ground? How is he 'ninjaing' it from you if you didn't pick it up yourself during the timer and it no longer has your name on it?

Honestly, I think GGG should just remove the names from the timers as that's what seems to be creating all this entitlement.

If the ranger in question helps me kill all the mobs in a glorious fight before taking items and then takes the items he needs and leaves the items I need for me to pick up. He indeed does not deserve to die and instead has the rare chance to become my friend for live.

Ninjaing refers to the practice of abandoning a fight to swoop up everyone's loot just to vendor it for a handful of shards. That practice would warrant cutting the ranger up with the 2-handed sword Duelist XCodes was talking about.

Also for further clarification:
The entitlement is not created by the name tag on the item. When I'm playing in a 6-player party me (and everyone else) in the party is entitled to a sixth of the loot. Loot-ninjas just pick up everything that looks shiny whether it could be useful to them or not.
I beat cruel, ruthless and merciless and all I got were some maps.
XBone: the beginning of the end.
I say add a 10 second timer that will give everyone with lag issue enough time to get their items.

I am sick of my GCPs getting ninjad!!!

There is no meaningful competition over loot. There is no tussle and clash, no butting of heads, no interesting interaction whatsoever; there is just *click click click click*. This is supremely unenjoyable.

Don't give me that "This system is more exciting/competitive/hardcore" stuff; I would kill (literally) for a hardcore system, and will probably play pvp-style leagues when they are made available. Give me competition all day. Give me free PvP; let me murder the douchebags who think they can go around filling their inventory with every good item they can click click click; let me take their inventory. Die by the sword. Works for me.

Current system is not hardcore, it is not cutthroat; it is a ninja-looting clickfest. There's nothing meaningful or exciting or interesting about it to me. It is a repercussion-free responsibility-free douchebag-fest.

This system is perfect for those who enjoy the clicking-items-as-fast-as-you-can metagame, and quite literally nobody else. Now, I am not about to call myself "hardcore" but I have played in competitive and "evil" guilds all my online life; we've murdered, looted towers, infiltrated guilds, and made friends with the sole purpose of backstabbing them and taking their stuff. Monster-killed in Diablo 1, Monster-killed in Diablo 2 and don't get started on the bigsilly you could do in UO, or EQ for that matter.

I've never met anybody in any of my guilds who was impressed by being able to go around ninja-looting items. It is like... the lowest possible thing on the darker-natured competitive gaming totem poll. It is the "racist youtube comment" of the gaming world.

I am someone who WILL make friends with you... only to steal the key to your guilds' tower and loot it dry. But I WILL NOT rush over to loot your kills like some needy loot hungry griefer dork, and I don't want to be forced to. Even scumbags like me have more class than that.

Current system forces me to be "that guy" though, and it forces everyone to be that guy... not just in order to get a lot of good items, but even to come anywhere close to getting your fair share.

This is too true
grrrrrrrrrrrrr, if im in a 5/6man party (ESPECIALLY with summoners/totem users or poison arrow) i lag so badly i cannot pick items, even when i click instantly on objects i lag so bad i get jacked. PLEEEEEEEASSSSSEEEEE give options.

I don't really care about the names, IMO the names just create a whole 'nother problem: if in the same example above where we've got a Bow Ranger and a 2H Sword Duelist and they kill a unique mob, said mob could easily drop at least 2 rare items and stick names on them that really have nothing to do with who could use the items better.

For example, it could assign a 2-H sword drop and a hybrid Armor/Evasion item to the Ranger, and one each of a pure ES armor and pure Evasion armor to my 2H Sword Duelist. You could be reasonable about it and trade the items later, but that requires everyone involved to be paying attention to what's going on, and to have the patience to stop going on a bloody rampage long enough to be slightly sociable with one another and trade around the items. In this situation, this contrived loot system itself becomes just as much of a nuisance as an all-out instanced loot system with few of the benefits.
Why the timer should be increased a little bit

I feel that the loot timer is not fair to all players because of the following reasons:

- If you play on higher resoluton like 2560 you are at a disadvantage as things are smaller and more difficult to click. You loose 0.3 to 0.5 seconds here easily.

- If you use higher resolutions or play in a party sometimes it's just hard to see the mouse cursor, and there you loose another 0.3 to 0.5 sec trying to target.

- Because of the absurd amount of items that drop in a party you are pretty much forced to use the item pickup key in order not to pick up all useless items, and that also adds another delay as you have to press a key before clicking.

- Not everyone is 20 year old and full of spring. Some people may have a little bit of strain in the arms/hands or just less motor skills.

TLDR: THE TIMER IS TOO SHORT.

The timer is not a terrible idea, but it should be longer indeed.

Then the purpose of the timer would be that when it's gone, you know the person was not interested.

As of now it's way too short. It's a really very shy and shoddy "compromise" to make people happy but it's half hearted. Clearly the developers didn't want to do their best to remove the bad feelings from the game. They seem to think that it is the sole responsibility of the players and their state of mind (ie. be super chill and laidback and never tired, and never grumpy), so as to feel good about the game.

I know GGG is a very chill company, but not everyone has your luxury guys. People are stressed, tired from work, or whatever it is they have in their life. They log in a game to relax and to WIND DOWN; not to get frustrated by a badly designed loot system.

We don't want a cheesy game. Lovely little poneys and all that. We're just not as cool and chill as you are GGG and we get frustrated by the timed loot. It's frustrating really for both ends of the loot. Even as a nice player you have to double think because if you take something that looks like someone wasn't interested or was not rushing for it, then you may still end up being flagged as a "ninja".

Just today I had a Chaos pop under my feet while spraying enemies. I purposely refrained from clicking it and watched the Templar come and get it... only to see moments later in chat "Nice try".

When you are running around picking up loot, you're
1) Stopping to attack monsters, that others are fighting for you
2) You're taking their loot while they are killing.

Some players might find this fun. That's fine, no one is suggesting taking that fun away from you.

Some of us find the above behaviour akin to being a douchebag. We don't want to have to act like douchebags, nor do we want douchebags in our group.

Why not just offer a loot option instead of mandating that we either solo or play hall monitor for every new name that joins?

Why is this suggestion for an option so very unreasonable to some? Please offer practical reasons, and not airy views on game's "vision".
In a very grind heavy game the death penalty equates to...more grinding.
I still want FFA but just as a suggestion to toss out there, how does Instanced Loot for boss kills and FFA loot everywhere else sound?
