Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.

Just to put my 2 cents - the way this mechanic is atm I'm concentrating more on the loots that are dropping than the fights I'm participating in - which imho is a stupid way to play
you have people that complete dodge the fight to go click on the chest up ahead - the people who are fighting are completely unaware of what dropped for who and thus that player just stands over the item and waits for the timer to run down and hence collect free loot and free xp

the other thing when there are many drops - the drops scatter across the screen and if your lucky enough to get two drops from the same boss - you guaranteed to lose at least one while you move in the other direction for the other - this coupled by the lack of inventory space makes it real hard to pick up items on time
then the other factor is that due to terrain - clicking on the item sometime means travelling around a rock or up stairs but the timer doesn't allow for that

this mechanic seems like it was a good item 10 years ago but now days its more annoying then fun - yes to avoid this I could play Solo - but then I could also easily play another game that only catered around solo play

I think the loot system the game currently uses is great! It's seems to be a natural and fair progression of the loot system that was seen in Diablo and Diablo 2. I understand that tweaking the time allocation may be necessary, but keeping it an exciting and heart pounding experience is important! I do not think a lot of people understand how enjoyable this system can be. To see an item drop and stop everything, risking life and limb in an all out sprint to grab it! The gap of time since Diablo 2 was released has seen many games offering loot on an individual basis with no real concern for when they might pick up an item or if someone else will get it before them. So many players now days just see the system and think of the fairness of it all. But they misunderstand that the loot system is a part of the challenge. Can you get that item while facing down a horde of enemies? Will it lead to your demise and someone else's fortune?

On to the social aspect of it all. ARPG. Action Role Playing Game. If you have time to type while fighting and to strategize in the middle of it all, you probably aren't doing it right. This game is about dodging, moving, hacking, slashing, casting and looting. Rarely will you have time to talk unless you are in a town or you use some kind of VoIP software. That's how it has been for these types of games and how it will be, reguardless of the loot system. Multiplayer gives players a distinct advantage when it comes to item hunting: More items drop. Not just more items because of the number of players, but more items because you are adding way more damage than the enemies health scales. This results in more monster deaths meaning more items. So this system is offset well by the semi-FFA system that is currently in place. And while grouping with strangers can be fun, this system encourages you to make friends and play with people you can trust. This only helps to strengthen the social aspect of the game, not dismiss it.

Keep up the great work GGG! I'm loving the game!
The way the loot timer works is it allows just enough time if you are watching closely to pick up any loot that drops.

Ie if you are further away from the mob that dies when the loot is assigned to you, the timer is longer.

If you are closer, the timer is very short.

I think it was a good compromise considering GGG wanted looting to be FFA like it was previously with Diablo 2.

This adds to the fun for me and though I admit getting frustrated with sometimes losing my loot, I've snatched up my fair share as well.
Like others have said, it isn't your loot. The timer just gives people a fair shot at something for fps/ping/slow reflexes. The loot timer just encourages peoples entitlement and needs to be removed. Even most people in this thread think the timer calls out what is theirs. The game is FFA, nothing has changed. People complained about ping and they offered a compromise, it doesn't change the fact the game is FFA looting.

And that doesn't change the fact that lots of people think FFA looting is utter shit and detracts from the game far more than it adds.

If they ever allow party leaders to just change the looting system for their party, I will gladly bet money that 99% of public parties will use much longer timers OR instanced looting exclusively.

The game was built on FFA. It doesn't matter what certain people want.

People didn't want a RMAH in D3
People didn't want p2w in WoW
People didn't want FFA loot in D2 (people STILL playing!)

There are many other examples, but it boils down to not everyone is going to be happy.

Also it was said before by a dev that this game will cater to the 1 percent, a hardcore ARPG. Not everyone holding hands and frolicking on The Ledge.

This is nice and dandy ..but as you can see, many many people are frustrated by this loot system and they don't think it's fun at all. I LOVE!!! Diablo 2..Yet I think D2 loot system is horrible, this one is just less horrible. Of course..if Someone like it..let them play it that way.. But I have to see..just one..one single good argument why providing loot option is bad. Why it is so bad to make happy other people too.. Don't dictate what is fun and what is not.. TBH, that's exactly what Jay Wilson was doing with his Diablo 3..yet GGG are doing the same thing...

Will you eat your own words when loot system will be adjusted or loot option will be provided?? Don't be so defensive about them and this game.. this games wasn't build with FFA in mind..there is nothing..NOTHING design wise, which supports FFA loot idea.. except FFA loot itself.. if there will be enough people, who will finally show them that FFA loot sucks, they can change it in heartbeat and no other part of the game will suffer.

If they ever allow party leaders to just change the fighting system so that all mobs die in one hit and all drop uniques I would bet money that 99% of parties would be killing mobs in one hit and looting uniques all the time.

It's a part of the game mechanics! The loot in this game is not meant to just drop for you. It is supposed to be a challenge to grab the loot you want. That is part of the gaming experience GGG is going for here. Asking to change it is just like asking for what I wrote above. You are asking for a nerf to a chosen design choice that adds challenge to the game.

Players who wanted a free-for-all looting system will hopefully be pleased - with this system they can take any item they want if the allocated player is not paying attention to the drops.

If they will stick with this system..without options.. this game will bleed badly..is already happening.. and it's sad..because this game is actually pretty good otherwise..
