Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.

If you were exiled to an island for doing something horrible, I doubt that exile would make you a "sharer". Even if it belonged to someone else, you would take it!

You would also be willing to kill the other person and they would not magically resurrect back in town. Are you suggesting that they turn default into hardcore cut-throat?

You can try and force people to like this system but it will never work. They will have one bad experience in co-op and then start playing solo. Which is already happening with the new players.

At this point*, it would be detrimental to GGG's commercial viability to change the loot options.

The value in making the system more GREEN would have been to retain GREENs who visit at Open Beta. After this weekend, they'll all have tried it out, been turned off of it, and decided against playing the game further. All that will be left in game is REDs and people who are colour-agnostic (able to tolerate the current system even if its not their preference).

If GGG changes the system to be more GREEN, they'll alienate the REDs, who will leave. But there will be no mass gain in GREENs. The coverage of a fix is never as high as a release, so the word can't get out enough to reclaim any meaningful number of lost potential players.

Something like that.

* I'm assuming their resources are all bug-fixing right now and won't get back to balancing for a week or more.

There're more variables than that, but I think the most user friendly option would be for GGG to add a party setup about the loot when creating it.

Why would they leave? Because there are loot options and everybody can play as they desire, including REDs on FFA, having the same game experience as before?
Will they leave out of spite?
this is a really bad thing for multiplayer

we need our own loot or make the timer longer so people have more of a chance

to pick up their drops.

countless times ive lost a good item because i have to walk over to pick it up

meanwhile some ninja has been standing on my drop spam clicking while im killing mobs
this party loot system is bad, timer is too short, its not funny play with ranger and watch melee ninjas stealing my loot, better play solo which is half of fun

33. Switch to the personalized loot system.
This game is trying to find an alternative to the handholding loot system in D3. Many people like FFA loot, including GGG, but it has been acknowledged that ranged players are at an advantage where loot is concerned because they're so far from it when it drops. To fix this, the loot timer has been added. So far this system seems promising, but the time on the timer may be lengthened in the future (due to the results of a poll).

I suggest next choises for the poll:
1. Current timer-oriented loot system
--- a. extended timer ?
--- b. extended pick-up range ?
2. Personalized loot system
3. FFA loot system
4. Party leader decides (between personalized/FFA/timer)

When poll (mentioned in quoted text) will be initiated?

Dissatisfaction. Sense of betrayal.

(These are guesses, I'm a GREEN.)
I really do not enjoy the current loot system, it's better than D2 but far worst than D3. With the current system, I feel forced to always look at the loot and rush to get it, I do not like this AT ALL. I like to play in a relax way...meaning that I want to take my time with looting. All that is just worst in public games...

Please consider using the D3 system where all the loot is individual, it's pretty much the best system imo...no need to rush or police the loot, no ninja looting in public games, etc. Or... at least increase the timer by tenfold, that would help a lot.
