Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.

Can someone explain the thought process behind /wanting/ the loot system to have a "cut-throat feel"?

I personally can not enjoy a game if I have to be on edge over things that I shouldn't be on edge about. There's a difference between focusing in competitive pvp or against a hard mob and constant neurosis over whether or not I will be able to pick up any loot.

Mark me down as another player who is annoyed and put off by the timer system. The timer is way too fast. I will never play with strangers in a public game at this point, which is disappointing, as I was looking forward to adventuring with all kinds of people. But the stress and frustration of getting loot that was allocated to me snatched up because I want to play ranged (and yes, I do pay close attention - it still happens) far outweighs the fun I would have in a public game, as it stands now. I really dislike being forced to stop in the middle of a battle to make sure I run run run to scoop up my loot - it makes for bad game play flow in the battlefield. Please make the timer longer if you intend on sticking to this system. Thanks.

Edit:
Or better yet, implement the idea others have had: Give us the option to choose our loot rules at party creation, so people can have a choice between FFA loot, timer, or instanced loot for each individual in the party. Seems like that would make everyone happy, as they'd be able to play however they like by joining or making a party with their preferred loot rules in effect.

Well, well.
Looks like Non-FFA reinforcements arrived!
:p
Hopefully this caught the devs attention some more!
hiyas, quick post, i've read both sides of the argument, and i can see where its going, but its very simple.

timer is too fast, i won't be playing with groups if i have to fight over loots.

i'll just play solo, or with guildies, where we'll treat loot as ffa, and share like guildies should.

call me *insert name*, but i'm here to clobber stuff, not stand around the loot clicking madly while monsters gank weaker people.

also, i'm not here to play with people who like that sort of gameplay. its about "teamwork", and fighting for loot isn't team work.

on cutthroat leagues, i could see battling for loot, i'd be trying to kill you at the same time. makes perfect sense, but in "coop" mode, not a jot.

also, can we please have an option to just set loot to ffa?

frequently in guild runs, we have a designated looter, and gear either goes to the guild bank, or gets split as evenly as humanly possible between participants. waiting on timers is annoying when you don't want to.

so! the timer is both too short, and too long. i'm glad we cleared that up.

good job, GGG, keep up the good work.

<3 GGG.

Choose your party wisely :)

Loot has no "ownership" - that's the purpose of loot. If you don't like it, go back to D3.
Theres been many many well written posts on this topic in the pages in this looting thread.
Good to know that people just write 1 sentence *solution* like:

Segregating the community with whitelists, blacklists, non-listed.
(Great idea, lets make people avoid having fun by making *teamwork* mean *hating eachother*)

That its cutthroat.
(which its not, i cant freeze the ninja looter with my icespears even if i wanted and tried.)

Adds loot tension.
(FFA should be in a pure FFA cutthroat league, as that allows for turncoats to make sure the ninja looter doesnt get to keep the loot).

Its not *stealing*, its *shared loot*.
(It has my name on it, therefore its mine.)

FFA loot should be something thats in a pure cutthroat league, and have the rest of us non-FFAers have option to enable instanced or much longer timers.

And why exactly would he go back to D3? If your seriously asking every player who doesn't like this loot system to "go back to D3" then you must really hate GGG for sending so many players away.

Loot apparently does have ownership regardless of what was intended by the devs by putting the players NAMES ON THE LOOT (Gee I wonder what will happen...). The players perception matters more and I think we can see what that is.
Standard Forever
I'd much more like the idea of loot having in-game options depending on the league you play in. Voting, rolling for it, or FFA as choices for parties in the default league. I wouldn't expect anything less than FFA in the more competitive leagues so anything above hardcore would seem to fit.

The fact of the matter is, there is a vast amount of people who purely play casually and don't want to worry about a good item getting scooped up by people who are greedy/ninjas. Just because they were finishing off other mobs to help the party or they were asking who in the party needed that new gem that just dropped doesn't mean they should have to snatch up an item the second it drops to avoid those people.

I understand the idea of the cut-throat atmosphere and that's great but some people just want to have a friendly game with other players. Why provide the risk of such a hostile atmosphere to the casuals?
Well there you heard it, GGG wants to attract all the assholes full of thieves and ninja looters.

Looting sucks in this game and I hope you guys at GGG are happy, so I will continue you playing this game alone because I don't want the added stress of fighting for items, but don't expect me to play forever as playing alone sucks..GG
