There is absolutely, zero, zilch, nada reason not to put in an option upon party creation that makes the group loot FFA or Designated. People who enjoy FFA can join FFA groups, people who enjoy Designated can join Designated groups.
Not giving that option is really the equivalent of saying "Well these players enjoying hardcore really enjoy it, so instead of having default league we are now forcing everyone into hardcore"
It really is that silly...and holding on to that tradition will always create controversy and a rift in the community...its not worth it, let people enjoy the loot thats dropping the way they want to enjoy it...

I just started playing PoE yesterday and just checked this thread now. But I'm totally with Xyre on this one. It can't be that hard to give players the choice for FFA or not. Personally, I hate FFA for all the reasons others have mentioned a hundered times over. But I respect that others like FFA. Just give us all the option of FFA or not....problem solved and community saved ;)

It's been said, but FFA loot, even in its current "compromised" state, will essentially ensure that I only play with friends--and RL friends at that. Otherwise, you and your party will always be at a disadvantage if you're preoccupied with worrying or infighting for loot. I understand that this is how ARPGs have traditionally handled loot, but to me this has never been an essential feature of the genre. This game give players so much variety in so many respects; why not extend that variety to players' options when it comes to looting in their party? Because as is, this approach might just nullify for many players an important and actual game feature-- the social tab.

Considering the horrendously large rift in the community about FFA, I see absolutely no reason why the party leader couldn't set the preference.
I however, don't care either way. I will not party with anyone I don't know and expect to get anything, therefore anything I do get, is completely more then I expected :D

FFA loot and the targeting system are the weakest points in this game.

I'll probably never play in a party anyway, but +1 to having an option for the party leader.

+1 for having an option in the party creation.
Personally I have never enjoyed the FFA system, for me it quits the fun on playing in party, and just prevents me on doing so. Probably many are in the same situation, and a simple option could improve the enjoyment of so many to can experience all the features of this game

FFA loot is frustrating and requires you to play only with your friends that you trust and not all friends are trust worthy.
Think of it like this. every one at GGG is working on PoE at their desks typing away. Someone gets off lunch and yells out "I have a donut I didnt eat, gonna leave it here on this table, first person to grab it eats it!". Lets say EVERYONE wanted that sweet delicious donut and everyone gets up and runs for it. Only thing is, the closest person to the donut got the donut. He didnt even have to try or run and he will not share his donut, not even to chris who is begging for a taste.
This is exactly what FFA looting is and it is NOT FAIR to ranged players. It is also fairly common to see a player pick up EVERYTHING cause he is just that greedy. some of these players dont even help and kill stuff, they just wait for the loots. Especially double totem users, drop a totem and pretend your playing. Hell now that I think of it, double totem users in OB will have all the time in the world to look at loot drops since other skills do no dmg.
