You're the one that needs to learn to play, if you're satisfied with a 4L when you're at the map stage of the game.
I for one didn't say it's not possible to do maps with a 4L. But..have fun with your gimpy dps.

This is called masochism, playing rare mods with such crappy gear. Just to give you a clue: found today 66 lvl blue map with mod +30% monster's HP which have a bonus +6% iiQ. And when you shot for +120% iiQ, you are going to suffer
I bought 5L for 16 chaos in Act 3 merciless, not the best but quite cheap. Everybody can afford something like this, but actually find - doubt it. Not for a long time after you finish Piety
I'm saying its Do-Able to do maps 70+ with 4L... you think that if you had 6L's you'd be good in 70+ maps? is that what you're telling me? I mean with -at least- 4L's if you combine the right gem skills (both melee or ranged) of your preferance..you'd have no problem doing 70+ maps.. and i never said group play... LoL ... solo only!
And ofc by not trading items.. ;)

If you cant reach higher then 62, then yes, you are bad. That places you in what rank on the ladder? 50k? Is that good in your opinion? How do you do in the pvp arena?
Your mistake is the word 'can't'.
Everyone has a different idea of end-game. Koivu has one, you have one, I have one.
Do not be the fool who presumes your definition is THE definition.
You didnt answer the question. What place are you on the ladder you play? How do you do in PvP?
I dont set the rules for the ladder, its in the game. THE GAME's defintion.
It relates to the OP in the fact that you cant reach higher in the ladder or succed in PvP without trading. Sure, you can scrub around at the 50.000 place on default and loose 9/10 PvP duels, but that is defintently bad by any defintion.
I don't give a fuck about the ladder or PVP; as someone who played D2LOD actively more than a decade. Please kill yourself. ARPG's are predominately about PVE coop.

Sorry but OP is correct.
Still I believe that high tier items should not be easily accessible. But at present only someone without a job may hope ot see anything worthwhile. (Don't make daft comments, we all know it's possible but only will happen in 0.001% of cases at best)
Frankly am quite puzzled about all the loot QQ in D3 and to see nothing here, I guess their trick to get people to busy on watching silly gem levels / links and the likes are working after all since it took that long.
To conclude, it should be about playing and looting not trading non stop to get anything, and to one of the smartass earlier, sorry bro this game is usng the smae mechanics as a mmo.

you can get a 6 link and more from racing. top tier items should be limited to maybe 1% of playerbase. However these items shouldnt be relied upon. You dont have to use a Lionseyes or a Koams unless you build from someones build that requires it. Thats not really in the spirit of an ARPG tho. You should be making your own build with what you get. It keeps things interesting. Anyone who has done it knows that once you get that final gear for your build the game gets boring really quick and you make another char. Better to draw it out really than get free legendaries worth nothing or to have a bank full of fusings because 5l-6l in your colours are abundant.

Now I know that there's a few people out there who are self-found that have managed to get pretty far, but let's be real here, without a certain amount of luck, and an insanely great amount of time, most people would never get great items. I am not just talking about 6-links (which are practically impossible to find without trading) but many uniques, and even currency. I don't recall exactly when I started to play (sometime in the winter of 2011-2012) but in all that time I've gotten I think 3 exalts, and a pitiful amount of orbs of fusing (maybe 20-30 total) and maybe 10-15 GCPs. With the prices being what they are it would take me...oh.. 2-3 years to be able to buy say a Lioneye's Glare?
But basically, my main point is this: I know this game is multiplayer and all, but it -should- be possible to fare well (for most people) without having to do tons of trading, or playing for a ridiculous amount of time. I really like this game, but am playing less and less, because I know that eventually I'll reach a glass ceiling- I won't have the currency to buy things to get me further, and actually finding them on my own will be practically impossible.
All this game has done is change the "Auction House" to the "trading chat", it's barely more interactive, and you get cheated more, because people will ask ridiculous prices to their items- The good point of an auction house is that people see how much an item costs, and can sell theirs a bit cheaper so people can actually buy them, and the people buying them can make sure they aren't over-paying.
Recently, in default trade chat, I've seen a constant flow of the same 10 or so people selling great items like Kaom's for example, and nobody is buying them, do you know why? Because everyone that had tons of time to play the game (or multibox) already has one, and the price is impossible to reach for everyone else.
Something needs to be done so that the game's better items are available for the people that don't have as much time, are less lucky, or just don't want to wait hours for a good deal. Part of the fun in ARPGs is to actually find that awesome item, too bad this game, like D3, has made this almost impossible.
+1
I've been playing a few months now. Still haven't found/got any gloves or shields with 4 sockets. Having major problems with finding boots with the % in running as well. I have similar experience as written above ... but i found ZERO exalts. I work for a living, not like many here living in mama's basement able to play for many hours per day. I've had far better luck with d2 and getting items then here. Trading is a joke, since i can't play that much, impossible to get the items REQUIRED for trade. And i HATE the trading game, i came here to play ONE game, not two.

I'll agree having a lot of time is a sure path to netting gear. There are still plenty of other ways of acquiring items. Actually, they made quite a big change with area lvls that will help fix this very problem. Item lvl 70 is now reachable without maps. Always having to be in maps to find "good/sellable" items, caused a huge item gap between those who did have a lot of time and those that did not. Now that this gap has been bridged, you'll have more chances of obtaining those items, through means of trade or drops. In terms of uniques, well those are suspose to be chance items. I would definitely understand a raise in drop % for "build-enabling" uniques, just so more people could try out more things-to-do. Other vanity or top-tier items should be a crapshoot.
My experience has been different then yours. I've had a lot of time to play, but I'm taking that into consideration when I say what I say. I had to go the route of making a farming character first. Then, once I had a decent shell of items, I could try out the build I wanted. PoE is primarily a farming game to me, and to me, that takes time. I think making the items more accessible just makes the game lose its fun faster, but that's just my opinion. And that's the point. The developers have to bridge the different mindsets of many different people.
Once you reach the "glass ceiling", the ginding in a farming game kicks in. Just try and take it in stride is all I can really offer you. It takes time to get the best of the best and plenty of lesser gear will do you fine until then. GL man.

Edit. And saying a lvl 60 caster needs an ilvl 77 wand is dumb.

Shields can only have 3 sockets.
If you've been playing for 'months' without seeing 4link gloves, you need to get your eyes checked.

OP, what do you mean by 'good' items? What is your point of comparison?
If your point of comparison is the items you see posted in trade chat or on the forums, of course the stuff you find by yourself won't seem as good. It is literally imposible for the gear you find on your own to compare favorably to the best gear of the entire aggregated playerbase. To expect that comparison to be anything but lopsided is ludicrous.
If you don't want to trade, don't expect to have the nice things you see in trade chat or hear about from the people who do trade. The only thing that matters is that you can progress through the game self found, which, I assure you, is quite possible. Unless all my self found experiences are drug fueled hallucinations.

Er, no it's not. Every roll has just as much chance of giving us nothing.
IMO, GGG always intended trading to be essential to access some content.
Support for trading was there from day one (via drops on the floor out of town). The drop rates are geared towards it. The "build of the week" videos basically hinge on people trading to get the gear for advertised builds.
There has to be a low point where some people stop complaining because it's just not worth it, and I have yet to see it. - Squeakypaw, 2013
