Is this game simply not for me? Curious about vision

That is pretty much where I'm at.

I want the game to be for me. I want to love the game -- but it feels like the vision is still split.

I like the idea of a slower, more methodical gameplay experience. I like that intimate and memorable combat experience you get from an intense battle with a tough foe.

It's why I love games like No Rest for the Wicked...

But in order for that to work, you can't have 5+ enemies zerging your character. That isn't methodical.. it's just like Vampire Survivors only instead of your character scaling with the content -- you scale when you win the lottery... and your character is animation locked like in a Souls-Like.

Also -- I'm just not into games with layers and layers of RNG where you can just grind for hours and have nothing to show for it if you're unlucky. It feels like pissing in the wind to me. I need definitive tracks for improving my character.

I'm also not into games where I have to invest hours and hours and hours into a character that I'm not enjoying before I can start to enjoy it. That feels like CBT to me.

To add insult to injury -- I like that they are adding synergy to skills.. but I don't like the way they're doing it in POE 2. I don't want my skills to tell me to use them in conjunction with another skill. That is the kinda thing I expect to see in D4. It's the game telling me what skills to use.

I want to find my own combinations for skills.. so I want to see synergies with effects that can come from many skills... not just like "Disengage does stuff to Parried Targets." or "Twisters do ass damage unless you use them in conjunction with the whirlwind skill... which requires that you stand in one spot on an evasion character."

I dunno. I just feel like they've lost their way. I also feel like they're disrespecting the new player/beginning of the game experience in order to cater to people who only care about the end game... and I get that to some degree... but I'm not gonna play a game that requires I suffer for 15 hours before the game gets fun.

It needs to be fun right off the rip -- and that just isn't even remotely how I felt picking the game back up. It took me 1 hour this patch to lose interest... and that is really just disappointing.

But at a certain point it's on me to acknowledge when a game isn't for me... and just move on. I'm kinda hopeful that some feedback might help steer them in the right direction.. but I'm probably wasting my breath.

I agree 100% with your comment, its exactly how I feel about the game currently as well. Hopefully they see this feedback and improve.
No, they are making a game thats completely opposite from what their fanbase has been playing for years, you are not the problem

Different game? You mean we got two Early Access launches for PoE2, one in December and one in April, and they feel like completely different games. And somehow, neither is close to what PoE1 was, just in wildly opposite ways. Confusing at best. 😄

The drastic shift from 0.1 to 0.2 is honestly a huge red flag. It doesn’t feel like iteration, it feels like panic. Like the devs are throwing ideas at the wall to see what sticks, with no clear direction or long-term vision holding it all together. And that’s not a good look for a game that's supposed to carry the legacy of one of the best ARPGs ever made.
Yeah it's just bad lol
i still dont understand how they stick to the "vision" they already saw what happened in poe1 when ruthless was added

its still in beta. poe 1 beta was not better, many things will change until release.

Okay, I mean, yeah, it's going to get better, but that's not the issue -- not really, at least. The problem is GGG is creeping up on 20 years of development and they keep repeating the same mistakes. PoE 2 should be in a much better state, even in beta. GGG should have adequate experience to not release entire classes and weapon types that are completely broken.

I am genuinely curious about the development vision.

This has been by far the worst ARPG experience I have ever had.

I have 7000 hours in PoE1.

I played all the Diablos, Wolcen, Last Epoch, and all the random single player ones (hero siege, slormancer, etc).

Is this game simply not for me? It is genuinely not a good experience.

I totally agree with you on everything you said. I was going to make a post to say everything you said, but you already did it for me. Even though I like almost every other ARPG (including POE1 itself), maybe this game just isn't for me.
I thought about this as well, and my most cynical view is still this:
Jonathan really despised the way PoE 1 developed over the years. Now he's trying to make the game he always wanted and prove that his vision is better. However, he struggles to actually come up with something original, perhaps because he's realizing that PoE 1 was lightning in a bottle that he simply cannot reproduce.

I could very well see patch 0.2.0 as his way of testing how much players are willing to "join his vision." It will be interesting to see how stubborn he is—whether the balancing speed increases, or if he really will sit things out until 0.3.0.

With the very lukewarm, bordering on negative, reception of the patch so far, GGG is certainly under a lot of pressure. This is a precarious position no company wants to be in, as it can make or break the long-term success of a game.
They need to bring back Chris Wilson to get GGG back on course. I don't expect 3.26 for POE1 to be out this year considering POE2 is an unmitigated disaster of epic proportions since the 0.2 patch was released. GGG was far better of under Chris Wilson at the helm.

Just my two cents.

This was the future of PoE. PoE 2 was Chris's vision for PoE 1. Lake of Kalandra and all of the preceding leagues going to back to Expedition were supposed to help transition into PoE 2. Kalandra and rolling Archnemesis wholesale into the core game is why we got Ruthless and why GGG spun PoE 2 off into its own game. Ultimately, we don't know what happened behind the scenes, but I have the suspicion that's why Chris left -- Chris was adamant that PoE 1 still transition into PoE 2, despite the backlash, and Jonathan et al. argued that they should hedge their bets and split PoE into two. Ruthless was supposed to be Chris's pet project as he took a step back, but once that also bombed, he didn't have any reason to stick around. Again, that's just speculation, but... Where there's smoke, etc.

Chris helped create and led the development of a great game that I love. Although I disagreed with an awful lot of decisions going back to 3.5, I appreciate all of the passion and effort he put into the game. But if this is what PoE is supposed to be, I'm not exactly clamoring to bring him back.
