Jonathan Rogers Interview about POE1 playerbase

This Jonathon Interview is confusing, if NEW players are OK with PoE's difficulty, then why bother making a NEW game then?

They didn't need to spin this off into its own game, just make it a expansion and continue just adding to the game.

Again, why did they? Was it because they needed new customers who weren't intimidated by all the content and bloat?

I'm extrapolating, but it's various reasons :

- Expading existing campaign would make it too big
- Bring new players in with the...
- New and shiny up to modern techs
- Getting hard to handle new things with so many mechanics. Things can explode out of control.
- At some point you kinda need to reset, you run out of working ideas, or you're limited in the possibilities.

They hesitated VEEEEEEEERY long, didn't initially want to make a new game, as that would split the community (guess what, he was right :D). Tried some in-between (new campaign but same endgame), which didn't make it.

If you want now the actual facts, here is the video. Your point start at 5:00. Enjoy

I've seen this video before. It was a load of lies then, it's a load now.

To be honest, the thing I'm most concerned of is that large parts of the innovation this game has over poe 1 (e.g. slower pace, less, but more meaningful loot, hard bossfights, focus on improving as a player over simply outgearing, much more engaging moment to moment combat contrasted to 2-button builds) slowly get lost by appealing to the poe1 player base.

That will depend on if the PoE2 crowd will pay the bills. I, and reading the forums many with me, stop throwing money at GGG now that we know that the game we want to play will stay with old graphics and most resources will go to a game we don't want. Let's hope for GGG they can retain the PoE2 player base but I see no returning value in this 'game'.

Funny thing is that in a few years or so, when nobody plays the game anymore they will make it zoomier, but by that time the majority of us will have moved on to games where we know our money is spent on our game.

pretty sure they wanted to make a game they enjoyed, and poe1 went off those track s long ago.

This game will go off those tracks too as the player base dwindles.

I get it. the sentiment is that any time spent not exploding packs is time that could be better spent exploding packs. And that includes time spent attacking packs that are not in the process of exploding. Time spent traversing a level between packs is time wasted that could have been spent exploding packs. Time spent fighting tough rares that take more than one shot to bring down is time that could have been spent exploding that rare instead, and then getting to the next pack. Time spent fighting a boss for longer than the time required to see each of its attacks/mechanics once and exactly once is time that could have been spent exploding the next set of packs on the way to the next boss - and frankly even just seeing the boss's abilities the one time is asking an awful lot.

This is not at all what I said or implied.

That's just what some people have been saying to feed their narrative.

The facts is that they never said that.
Chris Wilson personnaly likes slower/harder gameplay. That's how Ruthless appeared, and noone liked it.
Those are the facts.

The above link is an interview with J.R. I recommend watching the whole interview.

11:05 second minute mark J.R. goes into detail about the POE1 playerbase not being receptive of the difficulty. The interesting thing is he is exactly right . Most new players to POE are enjoying the game and the challenge.

Difficulty is here to stay boys!

Jesus christ, you again? You joined a week ago, you know nothing about PoE in general, the game isnt even hard, at all, you probably didnt even reach cruel yet with how much youre around here, im doing tier 15 maps, it´s the same shit, just smells different, stop thinking youre special because youre playing a hard game because you´re wrong in both ways.

FFS i knew this new wave of players would attract this crowd...

They sold it as poe 1 was too confusing and unapproachable for new players because its systems were confusing. So in POE2 they dumbed down all the systems and gutted the fun and unique parts of POE such as build creation and crafting. But than they go and make POE 2 harder than POE 1 for new players. So its kind of hard to tell what their actual goal was. I suspect it was a way for them to sell the idea of a new game so they could make the game they wanted which was an updated ruthless with nicer graphics. It kind of feels like the developers actively hate their core player base, based off this and other past decisions.

POE1 enjoyer here. And yea its a shame that we are getting this sort of "wrap" because of these absolutely unreasonable people.

Just know though that those people dont represent us all. (not saying you think that)

I love POE2 and the direction it has gone. Love the slow and more thought out fights. And more careful gameplay along with crafting, however basic it is in EA.

I know there is plenty more to come and have absolutely been blown away by just one playthrough into mid maps as a single character (warrior titan).

Many more builds to definetely come and alts to happen for sure.

No, they need a new solid base, because PoE1 gets hard to produce new updates ON. Everytime they introduce a new mechanic, they run the risk of everything exploding.
That's the biggest reason I can see, from a creative point of view.
To be honnest, they kinda have to deconstruct and rebuild overtime. But finding the good base, interesting enough but not setting yourself in a corner from the start is pretty hard.
Let them cook...
