Jonathan Rogers Interview about POE1 playerbase

The thing about the "difficulty" is that it just goes away when you reach endgame, and you're just going back to playing PoE 1, and they actively start punishing you for the way they trained you to play in the campaign. "Just keep at it learning!" "haha sucker we're taking all your exp and bricking your map"

Their design style just isn't unified across the game, and honestly encounters, both random and bosses, just aren't made with the care that the more methodical gameplay they're pushing needs. On top of that they slowed the players and not the enemies, those things are still zoomy as ever. They need to pick between gear/build check or skill check and commit, and they just haven't done that, leading to a lot of confused feedback.
A large majority of the player base is likely not at endgame yet. The rest of us need to experience end game before we can leave an opinion on what we think needs to be changed.

Exactly right. I'm still plodding along in Act 2 and quite enjoying it.

Well Jonathan is disconnected then.
I think POE2 will not surpass POE1 player numbers

They should have stuck with the original plan and make POE2 an POE1 Update/Extension

How many games have you lead and developed?
I played a fair amount of first game but I don't consider myself part of the player base. This game is far more to my liking than the first one.

That said, I have issues with it. Builds are way too railroaded, trials are awful, crafting is complete RNG, and you absolutely cannot get to endgame with random gear off the ground.

I don't want to be forced to use the fucking trade site in order to finish the campaign. If we're supposed to make our own gear then we cannot rely on random drops. Vendors need to sell orbs for gold, or there needs to be deterministic currency drops, because for every player claiming that they're drowning in exalts you got someone like me who's gone 60 plus hours and had like five exalt drops.

That's the nature of RNG. Someone is always going to be on the low end of the bell curve.

We also need to get rid of this "follow the one true build or be ineffective" bullshit. What's the point of having a huge skill tree if there's only one way to make your character not suck, and anyone who figures out a build the devs didn't intend is going to have their character nuked from orbit with no compensation?

Do you believe the developers made this game and no one in the studio was able to make it to the end game because no gear dropped? And they decided to release it anyway for players to test?

"Why are you serving me rotten eggs, this tastes disgusting"

"Well how many meals have YOU prepared, huh?"

I believe the developers are a very small sample size and the whole fucking reason they're having this Early Access is to get a larger one.

They've already increased drop rates so clearly your argument is bullshit.

What's funny to me is that most of the PoE1 diehards aren't even really complaining about the difficulty per se. They're complaining - endlessly, and miles beyond the point of absurdity - about not being able to blast. They want to clear the game at literal lightning speed, moving through maps/instances in thirty seconds or less, one-tap a pack before the pack is even finished rendering, and the fact that they have to walk - with their own feet, no less! - and fight mobs and/or bosses for more than thirteen picoseconds is just excruciatingly, agonizingly unacceptable.

Like, they absolutely cannot deal with the fact that in order to get around an instance they have to walk, with their actual legs, instead of just using a movement skill to achieve escape velocity and dash around faster than the game can render frames. Or the fact that the bosses in the game get to actually use their abilities instead of being phased, stunlocked, and killed before their opening animation is done. Or the fact that packs in the game actually have health bars and aren't just there to explode into showers of thousands and thousands and thousands of drops the moment a PC gets within five screens of them.

To everybody else, it's like...this is just how games are supposed to work? PoE1 is the weird, ultra-niche exception; this is a regular game. And a damn good one at that, even with the early access jank. There's definitely Early Access Jank, for sure, but the bones are phenomenal.

+1 this comment brother. I never played POE1 and never heard about it until the hype around POE2. My brother didn’t even know about POE2 until I started sending videos of it to him.

We are both in agreement that this game is freaking solid!
