PoE2 is simply not an enjoyable game and the player counts are going to plummet

"
I’m loving POE2. It has everything I was looking for…

Why is it mostly POE1 players complaining?

What am I missing here? The game is nearly perfect except for a few small tweaks that can easily be fixed before the full launch…

I don’t understand

Expectations are dangerous, i'm pretty unhappy overall but there isn't any denying that PoE1 has coloured my idea of whats possible in a game so I might think PoE2 was amazing if I didn't have that prior experience.

The loot is the worst i've ever experienced in a game i cannot think of a worse example especially when its one of the core pillars of the genre.

However my whining aside i'm really glad you think its a banger honestly if a shitload of players love the game right now then the answer is easy - its just not for me, and I can live with that. Its also got a long way to go so it could change substantially, either way i'm OK glad your enjoying it!
This game feels like a breath of fresh air to me. I enjoyed POE1 as well for different reasons, but as a fan of rogue likes I adore the execution gap. It's really satisfying to be able to take down bosses under geared by just practicing and learning.

I do worry that most players aren't like me - which is usually the case. I'll enjoy it until they either make it easy or until they decide targeting my corner of the audience isn't profitable enough.

I'm hoping there's enough support to keep it going, since games with execution requirements are far and few between. I've mostly given up on trying since every time one comes out that I might like, the communities turn into exactly what we see here and then the games changes to be way too easy.

There should be a game out there for every player, but I'm not fond of the wide net "get as many people to play as you can in a single title" types. Makes it hard to drill down and serve specific audiences.

It's a lot like books to me in that way. If I want horror, there's options. If I want comedy? Options.

I'm just thankful to finally have an option that suits me for now. I guess we will see how it shakes out.
"Life is weighted dice. You have some control over the outcome, but you'll never win if you don't roll."
I don't think it's going to flop. Player quantity will decrease inevitably, but i doubt it will be drastic. Reasons:

1. I think more and more people will be getting into that "bash your head against the wall" playstyle (reasons for that is the whole other topic). However, if Tencent wants a good piece of that "Elden Ring GOTY" audience, simply making their new game a slog may not be enough. So, there's 2:

2. Early access allows to experiment with the game to their liking. "It's just early access", after all. Cut all the monster HP in half, look at the reaction, count players, move to the next experiment, quadruple monster damage... You get it.

I fucking love this game, 10x more than POE1.
This is the game they wanted to make, and it's incredible.

I sincerely hope you, and the other instant gratification zoomer whiners go back to POE1. It is there waiting for you, while the majority of us, has gotten the game of a lifetime.

Thank you GGG, for making something truly amazing <3

Yea it's pretty clear they wanted to work at FromSoft but it's a shame that any FromSoft games far better than this snorefest. It's also funny to insinuate that they spent 10+ years making a game they didn't want to make, that's just flat out disingenuous.

numbers will plummet regardless of the game design. the real test is if people come back

I don't get this kind of mindset. I'm a casual POE player who usually only made it to 90-93 during POE1 leagues and then quit due to currency fatigue. I am very excited for what this game could offer but I am struggling so hard with what the game currently offers. I like the slower gameplay, but having to constantly run away from mobs while I do ~20% of their hp per shot is not fun. It's exhausting. By the time I'm done with a single area I'm just sick and tired of having to dump endless rounds into white mobs, or having 90% of the dungeon be essentially immune to my build (freezing in this case). I don't want instant gratification, I'd just like engaging combat that feels rewarding.

I agree. I don't want it to, but as it stands idk why I'd keep playing this over PoE1 or more to the point, Dark Souls/Elden Ring, the game they actually wanted to make.

Thing is:

In DS/ER the large open maps have tons of secrets and things to discover, PoE2 larges open maps are just endless slogs of combat with maybe 3 things to find

In DS/ER each boss drops a semi useful item depending on what build you are doing, in PoE2 the boss drops are garbage 99% of the time

In DS/ER relatively early on you can get your combat style going and if you are knowledgeable you can pretty much make a build before you even start the primary sequence of events. In PoE2 half my skills are locked behind lv 40 meaning I Will use the same handful of leveling builds each character

In DS/ER the bosses have telegraphed attacks requiring timing and precision that are clearly visible. In PoE2 it's just AOE spam mostly you spend your time spamming dodge roll in circles around, or at least that's what carried me to lv 54 and cruel difficulty.

The reward for beating this games spammy and tedious bosses is another spammy and tedious boss.

Once I learned maps were 1 death and you're kicked out, I just quit. MAybe it'll be fun down the road but PoE1 is a superior ARPG and DS/ER are superior souls games, this is a mash of both and a succcesor to neither.

Yeah it does seem like the devs tried to take some inspiration from the Dark Souls series without understanding what made those games so good/popular in the first place.

It honestly feels like they looked at PoE1 and thought "How can we make the user experience more miserable in every way possible?" and that's how they ended up with PoE2.

Dude, if you add up the 9 DS games sold on all platforms, there are less than 28 million copies sold. WORSE as Diablo 3 is only on PC, it has sold more than 30 million.
The truth is that Elden Ring is the ONLY Soulslike that we can reasonably call popular. The first two DS games are terrible and flops. Furthermore, none of them have audience retention because their collected gameplay is tiresome and easy to get bored with. Most of these games lose 90% of their play base in the first 18 hours and never recover. I don't understand how they can think that something so FAILED could be a good idea for a seasonal game.

Counter point. PoE 1 appealed to a niche miniority of ARPG players and PoE 2 fixes a lot of design issues the first game had.

PoE 2 will hit a higher peak next weekend because everyone realizes it's not like PoE 1. It's the next generation of ARPGs and GGG made a masterpiece.

PoE 1 is still there for those players that enjoy that type of game and PoE 2 is here for a far more immersive combat ARPG.

It is a masterpiece!!
I do agree the reward Vs effort just is not there yet, but it is early access and they taking feedback so give feedback. I do not understand why people being so melodramatic threatening to quit etc when they just need to give GGG their feedback. Personally I am enjoying it and I'm enjoying the difficulty but as I said the reward needs adjusting imo too.
