While it'll vary from person to person for me it was Teleport and summons being significantly better designed. On top of that you had a non-rng based endgame, the item hunt was more fun, and nothing will ever match the joy of Frozen Orb.

Kinda hard to judge something because everything is affected by time.

Take Superman from the 70s, compare it with todays superhero movies and its not so impressive. But the movie for its time was something really special.

Even though more modern ARPGs got made I think Diablo 2 will always be the highest regarded one, just because it introduced so much and improved several crucial things D1 lacked.
All these things has now become pretty much the basis of how a ARPG should be like. Stuff has improved since D2, but changes has never been that impressive that you been given that holy shit factor you had with D2.
I mean D2 was really really impressvie back then, now we have countless of clones and Diablo clones and just overall a shitload of games out there. All of this makes it hard for a new hack'n'slash to truly impress you. Same with oldschool FPS, RTS and turn based RPGs. Most of the new games will always be compared to the best games during their golden age.

People have to remember that there is alot of Nostalgia around D2.
I think if PoE continues to get new content it will definatly be one of the higest regarded ARPGs out there. For me PoE was a pleasent surprise, After playing D3 i thought that maybe ARPGs couldn't be fun today. But GGG proved me wrong :)

D2 had alot of great stuff, cool story, cool atmosphere, cool items etc etc...
But compared to PoEs end game it wasn't that impressive. There was just so much boss grinding over and over...Atleast PoE gives you some variation when you play different maps with different modifications. Also the map system will probably get even better in time.

Torchlight 2 and PoE is better than D2.

Guess nostalgia is strong in this one. It's the same with your first MMO, the first is always the best, even if it's a stupid asia grinder like Ragnarok Online (I love that game lel).
