Feels like a scumbag moment from GGG

I think the shelter analogy holds up just fine.

It really isn't. Like, I get the point you were trying to make in some roundabout way, but that analogy is really just terrible. Shelter is a basic necessity. Comparing literal extortion to what is at best predatory monetization is quite the stretch.

It's just a video game. If you want to play now, pay $30, which you can make in a little over 4 hours at the US federal minimum wage of $7.25/h. If you don't want to do that, you can continue to play PoE which is free and has like 15 years of content to work through.
Turns out they put the $30 price is to reduce server stress. They are already expecting 1 million on the first day. They said they are expecting to be much more than that when it becomes free to play.

You do not have to pay to try it out. You can wait until it full releases and try it for free. No one is forcing you to pay for this game, you make a choice to get early access to the game

No one is technically forced to pay, and that's not really the point. It's like promising "Free shelter" to the homeless, then clarifying, "But you'll have to sleep outside in the rain for a few years while we make sure the curtains are in perfect alignment, unless you can pay your way in now". It's technically correct but it turns the original promise on its head.

You have to be trolling.
Lotta broke people in here trying to play Olympic level mental gymnastics to avoid the fact the games full launch is free like they'll magically get to play the EA if they win gold.

I will pay to play a game at least 6 months ahead before launch day and knowing this game is what I have been looking for since October 28th, 2003.
I think the bigger unethical problem here is that you can pay $30 to get an early access key .. or having paid $480 prior.

$480?!

Why not $30? You know .. the price of the access?

Heck, even $100. $480? The cost of a yearly supporter pack at the highest tier? Seriously?

Seriously ?
Nobody said you had buy packs for one year of the game..
This is option for long payers/supporters.. For all life of PoE 1..
Why they wouldn't reward players for supporting their game ?

This is EA.. Purpose of TESTING, improving BEFORE RELEASE. That means
we dont need milions of players which will play game, says it horrible and dont try report bugs, improve things, give some ideas with group of another players. Just wait on Full release in that case. The game isn't finished basically. It's same as all EAs in game.

You will get game for EA and then you will pay nothing. OR in this case
you wont pay even anything if you wait on polished game. While different normal game you would play full price after EA..

Wanna be part of testing ? Then dont except it for free, sounds it horrible ? Maybe.. but it's not first time or last in any game. (btw PoE 1 had same thing)

Never supported game except needs like stashs ? Then you actually dont support game for long time.. "Just bought DLC"

Idk why this post is still even alive..

exactly, they simply have to charge people for a free product because they can't accommodate everyone- its simple economics. its like the free stuff you get from late night cable programming- you just have to pay for s/h, its still free yk

Uh, they could have send out keys you know. Send out like 200,000 at first, see how the servers are doing, send out more next week. This will keep the hype going.

But no, apparently the only way is to extract money from their fans
