Experience loss driving some players away?

BTW I talked to Keigh, the guy who was #2 on the ladder just a few days ago with his blender duelist. He quit playing because he was 1-shotted by the ranged attack of the L72 Mine Map Boss (a copy of Fidelitas, so lightning damage). He had roughly 3K hits, 13K armor, 75% lightning resists and was at 16K damage; a melee character.

While I understand map bosses are designed to be tough, a L85 toon shouldn't be 1-shotted by bosses like this. At L85 one death is about 6-8 hours of gameplay I believe.

Now think about this - at level 85 the only way to get good experience is to do maps. But what happens when you can get 1-shotted by the bosses of the maps that you need to do to progress? Why even play? Granted one can skip the map bosses, etc. the simple factor is losing such a large amount of time and effort is not "fun" at all.

Makes me wonder how many other high level players have "rage quit" a character in addition to Keigh...

If he rage quit because of 1 death in softcore then he should quit and go play fucking farmville. And he more than likely was not 1 shot, it's just him justifying his idiotic mistake.
Actually that was just the death that caused keigh to quit. He died a number of times prior and was just sick of losing experience. I simply shared the straw that broke the camels back.
All that and a bag of chips!
The death penalty is one of the biggest contributor to path of life nodes meta and while it serves a meaningful purpose I can't help but feel it hurts the game more than it helps.

Check out my LA build: 1782214
I was soooo very happy to find this game after playing Diablo since it first came out in 1997 and being let down by Diablo 3.

That being said, I am very frustrated after trying a third (popular) build and not being able to get it strong because of the difficulty of making it past the higher level difficulties. The death penalty is very harsh in my opinion.

If I cant get this character to a higher level, ill be forced to leave. Im not into
aggravation that much.

Good job on the game though, ggg.

I dont like, that the experience penalty leads to almost the same popular builds in softcore as there are in hardcore, at least for high levels. It just becomes soo ineffective going for a bit more dps, when you lose like a days or weeks progress when you die. Dont get me wrong, dieing on hardcore is still different and much worse ofc ;)
But the harsh death penalty does create almost the same build variety. And I think thats kinda bad. Softcore should allow for builds to be effective - even at high level - that arent feasible in hardcore, just to offer people some more variety.
Exp loss is the awesome ness. sure some times you just die n lose enp, n wah wah its not fair.

But it makes the game mean more, to me anyway. Caring about not dying gets boring in the end. having to walk that same cleared zone again cause you failed, isnt the most thrilling thing you can be doing with your time ingame.

in short: Exp loss in sofcore is a good way to make the softcore leauge feel more hardcore without character loss.
Smoother than Smooth.

1. Find a area you can farm and not die in.
2. Farm for extensive amounts until you are overleveled and found enough gear/currency to buy gear.
3. Proceed to higher level area.
4. repeat.
