I believe PoE may be losing out on a substantial player base because of the death penalty mechanic

Who cares. This game ain't for noobs lmao!

LOL. you are right, they don't care.

And are wondering why so little people stick around playing PoE.. shame.

Should make the exp penalty 10% or 8% or something.

15% is too much.

Heck why not just troll you and make you delevel 10 times each time you die.

That is what hardcore gamers want in DEFAULT/STANDARD LEAGUE amiright?

D3 = no penalty on death = no thrill of combat
PoE = penalty on death gets worse and worse as you progress = thrill of combat increases and increases

In other words, PoE did it right. Dying sucks.

On the downside...in PoE you just gear yourself out so you dont die. As a result, thrill of combat decreases proportionally.

There is only one way to fix this last problem, but it would require a major revamping of how PoE is played (even though it does not seem possible, it would sure make PoE so much more epically awesome than it already is...maybe in PoE2...)
For me the Exp penalty is "ok" It's a bit high at the end, but i can live with it.
My gf quit cause of it though.

Would this work?

Characters slowly gain a buff called "On the Path of Exile" (whatever just a cool name) as they gain EXP. Only works on softcore league.

When you die, each stack of the buff reduces the amount of EXP lost by 1% (lets say the buff can have up to 50stacks, so at 50stacks you only lose 7.5% exp instead of 15%. The buff only works beyond 10%.

Pros
- High level players (80+) that have been playing well and not dying constantly are rewarded with less exp lost when they eventually die. (c'mon everyone is gonna die one day.). If it was due to a desync they don't feel so shitty about losing maybe 2-3 days worth of effort.

- Moderate level players (60 - 70) that have been playing well are rewarded by allowing them to level slightly faster.

- Low level players are not really affected at all. They just know that it's good not to die at higher level when the buff becomes more effective and as such have a mentality to avoid it.

- Scrubs who just wanna faceroll are never gonna stack their "Path" beyond 10% and will never enjoy the bonus given.

- Punishes people from Portal Spamming bosses at 0% EXP because they are gonna lose their buff which they worked hard to earn.

Just an idea.

"I don't want a game that takes away from your efforts"
It doesn't.. unless you messed up. in which case you weren't trying hard enough (lack of effort)

"But what about desync deaths?"
If desync kills people so often.. how do people get high level characters in hardcore at all?

"Good players die to desync in races all the time"
Maybe that has something to do with playing recklessly, due to it being a race format..

"If I am forced to play cautiously because of desync the game is broken. :|"
Well yeah.. the fact that there is desync at all is a problem. But at the moment it's part of the game you can't avoid it. So build around it.

Just my thoughts.
xp loss in poe drives me away but then i come back again. if the game weren't so great, i would quit for good though, cuz it steals my time and no amount of exalts in the world can make up for my time.

May I suggest a new penalty upon death. Having to stare at a picture of Jay Wilson for an hour would be far more harsh than losing exp. Like once you die every time you try and log in to POE for the next hour all that comes up is this pic. of Jay AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!

i totally agree with u. i work 8 hrs/day + family&kids....the little time i have for myself i want to see it put to good use, but the penalty always makes me feel like i just wasted my time :(

This is the worst aspect of it to me too. I dont mind a punishment for dying in softcore but god its a heavy punishment at high levels.
