Experience loss driving some players away?
" This is Path of Exile, not Diablo 2, hence GGG does not need to change this to suit some softies. This game is meant to be a challenging game. IGN: AchiLize

My problem with leveling is more on how it takes forever in the high levels and how the end game doesnt feel rewarding enough to do that much grinding. You will go broke rolling the darn maps.

" And quit, which is what GGG wants no? The rest of the 'end-game' content will be available along with a heap of new stuff when the game launches in a few months time. From what I've seen it's going to be awesome. - Michael_GGG

I like the -exp from death :x
It makes me more careful on my next exp grinding run :x Without -exp i wont play this game..it will make it too "modern" like the new Resident Evil from 4 onwards its too easy..previous Resident Evil episodes are challenging and i like it :) I enjoy NES-difficulty type games :) ign : ztxx

I'm also considering xp penalty loss on death as a good mechanic even if sometimes it is triggered by de-sync or bug-like death, why ? Couse it encourage players to think not only of DPS, but defense and mobility. That makes the game harder and in fact more satisfied after achieving level up, especially on higher levels.

You wouldn't even think how exciting might be exile, unless You choose the "wrong turn". |

There is a certain learning curve, its not just 100% gear that keeps you safe.
On my first 2 chars I died around 250+ times, and I played with mirrored items and cooky cutter builds. After I learned all the dangers I switched over to hc and played it solo with my shitty gear. And guess what? I still havent died on my first character on hc, I also play 99% of the time solo only(roa build btw and close to lvl87). Everyone who complains about the xploss should start thinking about his build, you can not expect to live forever if your build is shitty or if you dont know certain maps/dangerious mechanics/mapmods/etc. If they really change something they should even up the penalty to 50%. I have seen softcore chars at lvl92 that already have died way over 300 times, that shit shouldnt be possible. This is a hardcore game, made for hardcore player and it should stay like that. I dont want GGG make it piss easy like blizzard did with diablo. Last edited by Toki1337#0110 on May 1, 2013, 4:31:34 AM

I'm ambivalent on the issue. On the one hand, in a time when most games are going more casual, easier, no penalties, fewer choices, PoE has done the opposite, a bastion for gamers in a world of games ever more tuned for non-gamers. I like that about PoE; it's what drew me to it, the complex skill system. So I hate to see them cater too much to a more casual crowd.
And yet, by not doing so, the attrition rate will just keep growing. I didn't mind losing xp from a death early on in the game, but dying at lv 80 means many hours on maps you have to find/buy just to get your xp back to where it was. I'm not claiming this is somehow "unfair", or that GGG should remove a death penalty (because the game needs a death penalty). But I am acknowledging that the slog of grinding back that XP is the reason that I haven't played in two weeks. It's possible I'm just not hardcore enough for the endgame here, and I'm willing to accept that. But it is somewhat disappointing that a game which I introduced to many a friend and was super-excited about because of the skill system, I find myself uninterested in actually playing. |

Why would they change it?
Softcore is easy enough. And your friend is not a hardcore gamer if he whines about XP loss. If he would be he would played HC without whining like a small girl. Scrubcore always easy, in any game. |

I know a few who left because of XP loss.
I also know a few still playing because of it. More left than stayed though, but just shows how different people have different opinion on it. Personally, I believe heavy XP loss is an outdated mechanic, especially when your game suffers from massive desync and melee issues. It pretty much forces you into using cookie cutter builds that will ensure you don't die, even though you don't want to play that at all. Last edited by RamzaBehoulve#2076 on May 1, 2013, 8:45:16 AM
