Experience loss driving some players away?

No thanks,

When I see another level 80 character in town I want to know that he/she is skilled at playing the game.

If xp penalty is removed any bad player can become level 80 just by putting in 2000 hours of play time. A high level character should be an accomplishment not a right.

Just a quick aside to the OP:

Losing XP is not the same as losing your 'core effort' as you keep any gear, currency, or maps that drop during the playtime it took to accrue the experience lost to death. You may lose experience, but chances are that time you spent playing to accrue the experience most likely made your character at the very least economically stronger, and occasionally directly stronger by finding a gear upgrade.

The death penalty is pretty mild until well after level 70. You will have beaten the game, and can very easily do 3-4 levels worth of maps by the time you are losing several hours of play time to a single death. And if you get to a point where it seems impossible to level due to death, chances are you are about ready for a playstyle change that rerolling will offer.
Hey...is this thing on?

Lolz, this thread is still going, huh?

GGG will never change that, and it's good as is.

I'm actually more annoyed by you guys defending it. Why do you even bother, GGG would never abandon this feature, that would be like a 180° turn and indeed ridiculous.

Just stop worrying and let them whine, who cares?
To the OP, it may be, but IMO part of the game design is finding a way around the loss, or preventing it with skills, hp, gear, outleveling etc.

Reminds me of the time my wife (who plays a ranger) was complaining that she was getting owned on the ledge runs and loosing exp. I looked at her character, gear, spec etc and told her... well yea... you're getting owned cause you got no resists and 600 HP.

Get some resist gear (gave her a few prismatic rings), and respec some dps out for a few HP nodes.

I understand that everyone wants different things out of games. This game, however, is made for people like me who want the things I listed out of games. Lucky me. Lucky other people who like that. Lucky you, too, though, because there's a shitload of games out there that are less "hardcore" than this one.

Except that the existences of the non-hardcore mode suggests, and the hardcore mode, suggest that the point is that this game wants to be for more than one kind of player. All sort of in a similar range, but... I don't think a game like this, only without XP penalty, would be unrecognizably different.

You can always just vendor an exalt every time you die if you want a death penalty.

Just trying to live and enjoy life. No bother.
Yeah, this is the main reason why I play a lot less these days. Mostly I have around 1-2h per day to play tops and well today for example I died in a map due to a 10-second desync which made me lose the exp I had gained over 3 days. No matter how tanky you are - desyncs still take every last willpower from players.
I remember GGG announcing that they are "working" on the desyncs which was like 3-4 months ago? All I can see is that the desyncs keep getting worse every day.

The XP loss is fine, people have been playing with the XP loss for a long time in Wraeclast. Another part of ARPG is grinding, so if you are having trouble go back a spot and start grinding away for a level and or gear.
