You say that but people seem to forget that the downfall of d3 meant the rise of poe, many people (myself included) discovered poe afer getting bored of d3 in a couple of months and never looked back.

I think poe can look at a whole new generation of hardcore gamers rejecting d4 and trying something new.

That being said, if the endgame is rocksolid for d4 then that could mean no new blood for poe, and we might even see some converts.

The problem is that D4 proves that these games can actually have slower-paced, REAL game play feel and not just be a SPODE the screen cookie-clicker like Path of Exile has become.

D4s pre order and chicken sandwich first weekend beta had multiple times more people get to level 20 then PoE has ever had at any launch. And we don't even know how many more played the free weekend.

Numbers aren't everything when to comes to what game is good, but for GGG revenue numbers ARE everything at league launch. They'd be looking at an entire quarter of their year destroyed if they launched head to head against D4, thus the launch date change.

You are comparing concurrent players in a single instance with unique players across many days.

I posted a site that suggests 2 million peak at launch of a league for poe but that is only a guesstimate. We will never know unless GGG or Blizzard reveals those numbers.

*Sigh*

Literally every single game in history outside of GTA and Fortnite would have loved to have this "downfall". Ridiculous.

I'd argue PoE was going to be good regardless of what D3 did or didn't do. It was inspired by D2 and taken another direction. It's didn't "rise" because of D3, it rose because it was well designed, and developed with care.

Ironically from what you said above, its actually PoE, who has opened the door for D4, and sacrificed many years of little competition. They have no one to blame but themselves for not taking advantage of the last number of years, both on development of PoE2 as well as solidifying a larger base.

And those that want to say PoE wants to remain niche, that doesn't jive with their marketing blitzes and dramatic increase in the Twitch budget for sponsorships. They have spent a ton of money reaching out to a more casual / average audience, but then don't develop with them in mind. To me that's the most confusing part of GGG and PoE. It's lost its core values, to try and make more money, and it's an identity crisis imo. I think CW is trying to pull them back (Ruthless and PoE2), but idk how this established community will respond.

The remainder of 2023 with D4 launch, Exilecon, and competitive D4 seasons vs PoE leagues should be VERY interesting. (Maybe even a PoE2 beta sprinkeld in?)

You'll never convince me that poe will lose players on the long term to diablo4, sorry. The exception would be if diablo 4 endgame will be fresher and better than poe, which has a very, very small chance of happening.

Sure, poe league in august (because I can bet they'll have 3.21 last for four months) might take a hit and quite a big one, but the next one will be business as usual and with record player count, mark my words.

its copium to think people who enjoy PoE gonna leave permanently for Diablo 4 when Diablo 4 will release then yes every single person gonna play Diblo4 and its gonna hurt PoE but when everyone will be tired of Diablo 4 wich gonna happens in 2 months or so and their barely any endgame content they will just move back to PoE and then when they will be done with new league for PoE they will go play some Diablo 4 until waiting new PoE league Diablo 4 is just gonna be something to kill time with until new PoE league becuz not a single person gonna leave permanently PoE for Diablo 4

I won't have to convince you of anything really. D4 will be out in 60ish days, and presumably around for a long time with live service. They have a financial incentive to have good endgame loops and seasonal content. Their budget and scope is basically unlimited. The June revenue will be nothing short of astounding, and serve as a launching point for the game into the future.

Of course predicting that future is entirely speculative, and you or I can think about what may happen.
Good news is we will be able to see in live time what occurs.

I think too often PoE purists or hardcore fans here and on Reddit project too much on the average PoE player and their "loyalty" to the brand. You are sorely mistaken if you dont think there are large amounts of casual / average PoE players that get constantly alienated by GGG development, but have little options in the market currently.

Business as usual in a few months post D4 launch, imo, is a total pipe dream.

Idk either way one of our comments are going to age like milk.

It's hard to fault the group that liked D3 for buying D4 based on that hype. Diablo 3 was fine for some people. The major difference on D3 is that some of us bought it based on D2 and were largely disappointed. That latter group, which includes me, will be less likely to buy D4 based upon that same hope/hype. Diablo Immortal was clearly a mobile game targeted at that market where P2W is rampant. It's potentially a one-off that isn't necessarily a foreshadow. Then again, I could be completely wrong and it was the harbinger of things to come.

I'm not saying D4 won't have P2W stuff; D3 had it at launch as well (RMAH). But it's too early to discuss the monetization model.

Thanks for all the fish!
