Do you remember - 10 years ago POE started free for all

I remember nothing but running endless maelstrom with build that could not handle act 1 enemies now.
I feel pretty, Oh, so pretty,
I feel pretty, and witty and gay,
And I pity Any girl who isn’t me today!
I remember /OOS ... lots of it...
in 2012 it's just been "the promise of a great game", lots of bugs and desynced gameplay but ggg's dogmas about a "amazing arpg" were convincing the ones who knew and they also got crazy ideas and realised them whether players liked them or not.

they should have listened to those who appreciated their crazyness rather than on those who pulled them back on the boring maintream. but hey, this thread isn't about complaining, eventually ggg themselves ever told they were out to conquer the world and that's not possible with a challenging and complex game.
age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill!
Yes, thanks Alysma, iknow i do that from time to time.
Still "Shredded out of the Zeitgeist", notes missing, pictures stopped hosting, meme out of context, reading a archived one is like deciphering a book with missing letters, its not the same, it was a different time where everyone thought diablo3 is going to be amazing.

Well I can guarantee anything I posted, any thread I started on my other account (the one that used the second ever custom avatar, by an awesome fellow named Max Schulz [I still have the high res version of it on my HD somewhere]), is indeed gone. Not just MoonYu gone, but eradicated from all proof of existence. A shame but as it turns out most of my more...controversial threads were on this account anyway, so that's nice.

OldManWithABow becoming OldManWithABot was hilarious.

__

XvXReaperXvX receiving the Keyblade, and later a smokey version of the unique pet Satoshi (created by another Ruler of Wraeclast in lieu of a monster).

__

Apparently there were Diamond/Eternal newsletters at some point but I don't personally remember much about them.

Tshirts. So many fucking tshirts. I remember being at PAX AUS 2013 (July 19-21, 2013, the first year, I see now -- I seem to have forgotten that too) and loitering with Chris and Jonathan at the entrance to the main hall, trying to spot any other PoE tshirt wearers. GGG were giving out secret pet codes for a green and gold frog (green and gold being Australia's national colours). I don't think we saw that many. GGG were too small that year to get a booth of their own, or just didn't bother. I've seen much smaller devs get a booth at the indie section. Anyway, a few years later and they'd be too *big* for an indie booth but still a bit too small to get one in the commercial area where the big boys like World of Tanks and League of Legends clamoured for booth-babe space (before that was rightfully banned).

So in a way, GGG's convention presence from 2013 onwards represents the way the company and the game grew: 2013 it was so small maybe twenty or thirty con-goers in Australia knew of it. For PAX AUS 2014, there was a fan meet arranged by a hardcore Australian PoE guild (ACE). I think over 50 people popped in. We had this huge table at a pub, and later migrated to a beer hall. What I remember most from that night wasn't talking PoE (even though I actually knew and cared a lot about it then) but talking normal life shit with other Exiles. That was just awesome. It was one of the highlights of my entire PoE experience (1amish chat with Steelmage with too much beer in my gut was an interesting capstone), and then...boom.

By 2015 or 2016 GGG were way too big to bother with a dinky little thing like PAX AUS. The fan meet that was, indeed, just fans. It was nice, but it wasn't the same. A fellow earlybird item designer dropped by with his GF as I recall, but by then he was way into other games and didn't stick around. Clearly there were cooler things to do in Melbourne that night.

And then maybe a year after that, GGG would be receiving entire conventions of their own in China and...eventually, in 2019...their own country.

Anyway, tshirts. PoE has a fucking heap of tshirts.

There is a legend whispered among the more world-weary Exiles that of all the PoE tshirts, there is one rarer than any other. It is unique both in design and production. I myself have seen it, but cannot speak further on it, as those who do so are said to have been cursed with incredibly bad luck ever after.

And my last contribution to this thread: another video that makes the rounds now and then and one I suspect Chris would be glad never to see again. It's a locally produced game developer from 2011, an era in which he had hair, could barely speak a few phrases in Mandarin, and New Zealand's only real claim to fame was still the fact that its beauty inspired Tolkien to write Lord of the Rings. Anyway, enjoy.

If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

Nah, the internet isn't that forgetful :D
Example

Especially not if you post on a website that gets crawled as thoroughly as pathofexile.com

Oh, wow. Thank you, Alysma. That was a great thread. One of my best I think.

Not that I'm inclined to make THAT much effort to see what was, and what was deliberately removed, but it was nice seeing that title again. I imagine there are quite a few Exiles who've never seen it, and now never will, not organically.

Anyway, enough of the past. Let us look forward. Even if that isn't always in precisely the same direction, it is, I think, close enough to share at least some perspective. :)

PS that signature still applies.

I remember leveling in Voidbearers in Act 3... their flame melts
"I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming in terror like his passengers."
Went from closed beta, being fairly quiet, to open beta being tons of people all of a sudden. Made me miss open beta 😎

Such a different game back then. Act bosses and certain areas were actually a threat. The game actually scared you in areas, versus running through everything. Now you pretty much have to get to the end of the endgame before anything becomes a real threat. But, bugs were insane, which was expected in a beta. Chat was a nightmare and difficult to actually report the numerous bugs.

No matter what happens to this game, at this point, it has been a success for a small indie studio. They have made plenty of mistakes, some pretty big ones, but not many games have kept me playing for a decade.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
Still waiting for the competitive PVP but sadly I remember the reaction to the pvp patch . RIP

Was too poor to participate in the closed beta but I remember all those articles and the game was so interesting I was jealous not being able to play the closed beta.
