bit of pushback against comments chris made recently regarding the ex/div switch
" Standard was originally coined 'the dump league'. It existed (and exists) only for one use, to have a place where items, currency and characters are 'dumped' after a temp league ends. The prime reason for its existence is to avoid GGG customer service having to deal with complaints when people lost their stuff after a temp league ended. That's it... Sure, you can play Standard if you want, but any changes made to the temp leagues that GGG feel will make them better will also appear on Standard. There are some minute differences (mainly atlas handling), but that's it. In this case, GGG made a change that made a LOT of sense. Exalts were too expensive to be actively used by most people, because it was the 'trading currency', but would be extremely useful for everyone. Apart from a few edge cases, Divines were mostly for the top end min-max'ing players. So, GGG made a simple change not to use Exalts on the crafting bench, but use Divines instead. This makes more Exalts available for their primary use, improving items, which benefits a large number of players. Using up more Divines has the benefit of making min-max'ing at the top end more expensive, which means arresting power creep slightly. That's two wins in one simple change! I'd say this was one of their best small change decisions ever! ... and any effect on Standard does not count as it still fulfils its primary purpose well... This change did btw. not change the trading currency... Players decided Divines were now 'the trading currency'. |

Try dividing player currency by 10 in any other game and see how positive response you get from the community... This will be pissing off players for years to come, and any time the screwed players will even think of PoE, THIS SCREWING is the first thing that comes to their mind, and they will be instantly filled with the same rage again. People don't play to be filled with rage, they play to detach from reality, enjoy, have fun, feel good. If your game mostly only pisses people off, you're doing something horribly wrong and will eventually lose the players.

" You still believe GGG's made-up figure of the power-creep on players, that has no actual basis on reality? |

" Dude, the vast majority of players could not care less about their standard currency being divided by 10. They could have swapped exalted with chaos instead and people still wouldn't have cared. The complaints are coming from a tiny portion of the playerbase, and those are the only people that are pissed off. |

" Circular logic, no? " " " Which brings us full circle around: now divines are too expensive to be used by most people, so by your logic it would be a LOT of sense for GGG to make another same change, but for divines this time. The only reason players have to decide on their own trading currency is because there is no choice, no "official" trading currency by design. As for "dump league", somehow, Standard players do not deny league players their right to exist and play the game the way they want, but "no one should care about standard, dump" posts are unfortunately abundant... |

if people name-call standard, ill reply in kind
the guinea-pig leagues :) where all the half-baked experiments go to be tested. abused with mandatory mundane time-consuming chores (unlocking unveils, crafting recipes etc for 8th time sure feels 'fun') barraged with bugs and inevitable 'day3 and week2' patches that make the league actually playable etc etc standard compared to that is a cosy place with a premium quality of life features - you know, you dont have to waste your life to setup what you have already setup 10 times in the past. your old items are there, you can focus on what you like - in my case: making janky characters that sometimes require a T0 item to make work. oh and you dont need trade that much because you just happen to have most of the items youd need in your stash. yet another massive time saver sure, leagues are fun.. - well no, actually the fun leagues are fun. initial releases of leagues are mostly FAR from it - people play them, because what other choice they have? bestiary on release? heist on release? even harvest on release (ritual was peak harvest) - they all were.. oppressive for the lack of better world. you knew that it was a nice idea but the execution simply tainted it so im grateful for people to playtest leagues, i can happily wait 3 months to play an actually good version of it. and if it doesnt go core? oh well the only thing in the past 4 years that i actually miss from leagues were recombos. these were lit. but other than that? i had my fun regardless |

" You mean "happily wait 3 months to maybe play a neutered version of it"? :) Well, not that you're missing much, the least good league mechanic for me was Expedition. Non-invasive, not one but two separate 'pick your loot' mini puzzle systems, nice npcs and backstory, cool bosses, what's not to like. All since then have been B-production, ok, Sanctum took a good bit of work and would even be nice enough standalone, but as a mechanic for a game like this? Total design disaster. Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

" Actually no, because there is one huge hole in your argument... 'Most people' don't use Divines... Divines are a min-max tool, usable only by the few. Exalts are a general tool, usable by everyone. Last edited by Cyzax#3287 on Dec 15, 2022, 5:08:45 AM

" Referring to how Standard came to be is not name-calling :-) While I too would like to have a maintained Standard for continuity, I know it isn't financially feasible for GGG. I make software for a living (chances are you are in fact using my software most days, even though you don't know it), and maintaining separate release streams is a total nightmare which sucks up resources like you wouldn't believe. So, Standard will follow the temp league rules, with GGG applying only the least amount of effort to make it playable, and no more. |
