bit of pushback against comments chris made recently regarding the ex/div switch
" Celebrating POE2 launch by wiping Standard would be too much even for those who makes decisions like div/ex swap. Standard players exist, and they even buy packs (for a time, before quitting for one of countless reasons provided by the Vision). If GGG really want to use the opportunity to force "time to grind all your resources again, rejoice" loop on current Standard players, there is safer option to start another separate Standard league for POE2 chars, and cut it off from POE1 Standard. |

^this is sort of a separate topic (but its an interesting one!).
it all depends on how much GGG wants it to be "PoE 2" vs. PoE 4.0 blah blah. In order for the game to truly be a "new" PoE, even if it retains the acts and things from before, it would HAVE to start from the ground up. How can you retain all the items and currencies in standard if those currencies and items are no longer compatible with the new content? Would GGG just arbitrarily reroll or remove every single item that isn't compatible? That would be a massive undertaking. It wouldn't be as simple as just changing numbers around, it would void tons and tons and tons of items. Even looking at one single aspect of PoE2, the socketing and linking system. How in the world could they introduce that without erasing what already exists? The two systems are incompatible with each other. I think it is way more likely that PoE 2 is going to be a total reset, hopefully with ample warning. They MIGHT keep servers going for standard PoE, but it would just not be updated any further. If it were not a reset, it would just be sooooo much more work and also a lot more upset people...no one likes having random items changed or removed without their say. " Unlikely to be a factor in their thinking... The amount of players (negatively) affected by the Ex/Div swap is tiny... Most people don't play Standard, and most people spent their exalts in trading... I think that probably a lot more players were positively affected by the change... If they play like I do, my exalts were changed into items (as any divine I now find is), while the divines languished in the currency stash tab. Then they got transferred to Standard to languish there... |

the best part of that - the 'new' socketing/linking system has 0 advantages over what we have now and is a change for the sake of change (the 'we can have 10 6-links' argument is hollow once you realise that POE is mostly one- and in some cases two-button gameplay)
i wonder if they want to even go with that system now, but cannot backtrack because the statement was pretty big excluding some dumb aspects (horrid linking system aaaand.. thats it?) it is really good and self-balancing (socket pressure is a thing and a GOOD one) my take - there will be some sort of a wipe. even new ilvl 90bases and mods will be enough to vendor 99% of standard items. why keep them if multimoded 'Sanctum Sword' has 920pdps and 100% roll reaches 1600. on a 1hander. this is a wipe without actually performing one but you cannot do the same with currency so just swap them at random from time to time edit: standard economy is pretty big. quite a lot of folks do not want to waste 40-100 hours just to establish themselves in a new league. time is valuable, i do not want to do chores every 3 months. force me to start over - im gone, instantly. POE is a good'ish game, but not worth 100h just to have a nice safe stash, everything unlocked etc Last edited by sidtherat#1310 on Dec 13, 2022, 2:12:56 PM

^OR go the complete opposite way and bring down the upper end of items considerably for PoE 2, to the point where legacy items are twice or three times more powerful than mirror-tier PoE 2 items. And double/triple legacy items are 10x more powerful. GGG might not want to deal with that and prefer a full start-from-scratch.

League always was, and always will be, real PoE. How a change affects standard should never be a valid reason to not do a change that is otherwise good. I support what GGG did.

" Especially that last paragraph. Really nails the difference and relationship between market value and economic value. I tried to link to the wiki explaining this but apparently that wasn't allowed, so here's the relevant quotes (you can find the source by googling some portion of them I suppose): " and " To me, the gumball costing 25 cents as a quarter out of the machine is the market price -- set by the seller based on what they feel is the amount people will spend on it. The gumball potentially costing 30 cents because your 25 cents might not be in the form of a quarter is the economic price. It's obviously not THAT simple but it is an interesting place to start when considering that PoE's market 'is not a bank' and has none of the regulations/safeguards that a bank or indeed any real life economy does and should. And I suppose that is the crux of OP's legitimate nettling: an unregulated market driven purely by user supply and demand should not be messed with by the mint producing the currency for these transactions. OTOH it's their fucking game so best not to see them as a mint so much as the casino dispensing chips wait haven't we been here before? If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between. I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period. Last edited by Foreverhappychan#4626 on Dec 13, 2022, 8:55:20 PM

I don't play Standard but obviously a lot of people do, and from my objective and neutral perspective, I can see why they feel that GGG has f-ed them over. I'd feel the same.
Standard is not the main mode, never was, but Standard players are YOUR players. They are part of YOUR playerbase. Some of them have loyally supported you and the game for years, and they are partly the reason why this league and leagues before it were possible. They are part of the reason why the game still exists. Wouldn't it have been so easy to convert exalts into divines and viceversa for the people who enjoy Standard? It's already extremely clear that they are the more casual, time-constrained part of the playerbase, hence they would probably not grind/farm as much as league players, making their exalt stash worth infinitely more than what our divs are worth in one league. GGG, once again, instead of supporting their playerbase, decides to take the "kek idgaf about standard" route, even going as far as to tell these players that "they shouldn't have invested all their money into bitcoin". Like, it's your own damn fault this happened. WHAT? Is this a game or a "life is tough" simulation? I was so annoyed by that statement and I don't even play standard. GGG owns POE, they can do what they want with their game - no one is contesting that. But that does not mean they should not respect their customers, some of whom are loyal supporters and/or have been since the very beginning. This statement alone made me think twice about ever supporting GGG again. |

I have diversified my investment by playing games that dont shit on my time ingame.
So in a way, he is right. You should not put all your eggs in one basket. Why play poe for a month like a zombie on each league drop, just to get somewhere with your character? Works out great for me. After playing 3.19 I also have no intention of playing poe2, I've seen enough. “We are the race of flesh, We are the race of lovers.”
