Why don't we call crafting "gambling"?
I was just discussing video game crafting methods with a group of friends and explained fossil- and meta-crafting in PoE to them. The responses were "This really taps into people's love for gambling." and "Is there also actual crafting in the game?". It made me realise that this is a much more appropriate name for PoE's crafting.
Sure, you can add one specific mod on the crafting bench to round out your build, but that's pretty much the only crafting mechanism that exists in the game. The slight variability in stats is within the margin of error. Everything else is gambling: push in currency, mostly likely you lose it, rarely you get a win. "Crafting" would reflect the mass of the input ingredients: exactly one wooden plate and three sticks, you get a stool. Not a bench, or randomly colored wheel. The aforementioned slight variability in stats would be reflected as inconsistent build quality. I for one will be consistently referring to these methods as fossil-gambling, harvest-gambling, essence-gambling, meta-gambling etc. from now on. Cheers. It's closer to gambiling than it is to crafting you are correct. Just how Twitch calls it "Prediction" for their bidding/voting system.
But they cannot call it gambling out right as, it won't go well in terms of rating and classification. Heck Twitch's prediction is not available everywhere due to legislation. I have three phones, Blizzard. Three f***ing phones.

Because some types of crafting is less riskier than others and not really gambling.

Because we like to pretend that this game has a way to craft. There's gambling and slightly less random gambing.

We call it crafting because it is a common word for making an object in opposition to picking up an already finished object from the ground.

" Considering how randomly I actually look at the loot on the ground since the odds of it being something useful to me are so low, I'd call that gambling too actually. That said, there is a craft that allows you to put up to 3 crafted modifiers on an item deterministically, I believe, and also Harvest crafts do what they say on the tin so there are options that could legitimately be called crafting. |
