Imagine if Witcher 3 and Dark Forest Map had a love child. The result would be what greets you at the beginning of Act B, where you follow the Lunar Leyline across the Mirkwood Forest to get to the other slide.

Starting out at the first slide.

Because you're washing ashore in a riverside park and there's a playground near the quay. (For details on how to leave the playground in Act A, see my video "Half Pipe, Half Dead: The Skater Class Fast Start in PoE 2").

You've eschewed a set of wheels to move (more slowly) on your own two Nikes across the blacktop and past the Sand-Throwing Toddlers in the ball pit and Vagan Unarmed at the hot dog stand. You should have 16 skill points to spend and 1 ascendancy point waiting for you as soon as you talk to Buttercup the cow in The Clearing.

Do you have regrets (this is a rhetorical question, they don't usuall drop this early) ? Sick of being left behind by your wheeled friends as they jump curbs and demonstrate gnarly air time? Fear not.

The Forest (and the Scarier, Darker Forest in act H) reduces wheeled movespeed by 50%. This should slow down the Bikers and Skaters so you can keep pace with them. Pick up claws along the way, cause you'll need them after picking the Werebear ascendancy.

Note that life isn't fair - the fast kids get zoom-zoom ascendancies almost seconds after rolling their characters, but you and the rest of the slow boring noobs have to slog through an entire act to reach yours. Too bad. So why wait? Well, if you like cosplay, and don't mind being left behind to solo the rest of the campaign, this is your moment to shine.

Werebear limits you to claw or unarmed (later you can upgrade unarmed to Teeth) attacks. Your spells deal no damage and are disabled. You may turn into a were-creature at any time during a battle; or set it up to trigger with phases of the moon, enemy actions, or health thresholds.

By choosing werebear, you miss out on werewolf's buffs to allies, Pack Hunt, and Goodest Boi. You also forgo Night Vision, Nekomimi, and Nine Lives from the Catgirl ascendancy. It takes real nerve to go the solo path and the Werebear notables give you the best tools to do it.

Bear Necessities: This notable brings with it a huge chunk of HP and regen, perhaps the biggest in the game outside of standing next to a dedicated aurabot while wearing legacy acuities and wolfing down a vast reuben sandwich. You also get a free Gruthkul's Pelt and a Bruins goalie mask that reflect stuns to their sources - you never need worry about being slowed, not that you're very fast to begin with. You also get sockets in your Kaom's whenever you corrupt them with any corrupt implicit that would affect socketed gems. How's that? Just try it. Throw a vaal orb at some Kaoms (roots or heart don't matter which) and see what happens. Voila, sockets. You also drop ALL unique amulets with "Allocates Beef" pre-anointed for your convenience. Mmmm, tasty beef.

A Bear, a Bear, All Covered in Hair: This notable ensures you will prefer to be alone. Although it doesn't physically prevent you from partying up, it will make people want to stay away from you, and shoo you away. In return for this antisocial downside, you get all the contents of the dumpster, campsite, or cabin for yourself.

Specifically: All nearby Allies' skills, effects, and MTX turn a dull brown. +150% quantity of items dropped nearby.

That last part should ensure they don't kill you and turn you into a rug for their hideout.

EveryWerebear: This is my favourite. Ever have a flying mob that doesn't want to stay still long enough for you to poke it? This lets you climb trees, open doors, windows, cars, and rubbish bins. It lets you swat Sirus down from his high chair ending any non-interactive messing about so you can eat lunch. Vaal Temple? Ez pz. Your prehensile claws auto-open doors to get at the chewy blood priests inside.

How worth it was it to give up speed and versatility? You may never find out, because at its heart PoE 2 is still a zoomy, spellcasting side scroller of a game. You may ragequit at how slowly life moves on the ground in the forest. But if you really like bears, and don't mind a slow, inexorable, bone-crunching certainty of life, and don't care about literally anyone else in the world, this is maybe your cup of berries and grubs and slow campers.
