torchlight 2 has a beta weekend
"I hear the level cap for this beta test is 21, so you probably weren't underlevelled. I really like how the gear lets you equip it if you meet the stat OR the level requirements, would be pretty cool to see that in PoE. My 0.9.8 Marauder always had at least triple the required STR for his gear by the time he reached the level requirement. |

Hmm. I played some of it on the berserker class.
After what TB said about the combat feeling 'Significantly' better than that of D3 and PoE.. I am extremely disappointed. It felt good, but there was nothing special about it. Maybe the ranged weapons are better. I have a feeling it comes down to him having only played about 1 class in PoE for 3 hours, and the same with D3. But yeah, not feeling combat too much so far. As for the skill trees... they are a definite step back. Skilltrees can be cool, like in D2, but these just flat out suck. There's a couple of abilities per tree and that's basically it. Out of PoE D3 and TL2 this is definitely by far the least interesting and compelling skill system to me. I might play some more later.. but I'm not sure I will still be picking this up like I originally planned. ''Stand amongst the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honor matters. "Play the Engineer next - it's almost universally loved, with good reason. |

Played it for a night as Engineer, handled about as I thought it would. They missed their window of opportunity to satiate the market before the release of D3 and they are going to suffer for it. Modding capability is the only aspect they can offer, but I don't expect it to be very much improved over the last game.

I beat the beta solo with a cannon/bot engineer last night and played up to lvl 11 or so on the embermage in a group of 3 today.
It's a decent game and I can see myself playing through at least once with every class, but I don't really see the lasting appeal aside from mods. I definitely enjoy PoE more than what I've seen so far of TL2, but all the polish and thought that went into the game is very much appreciated. TL2 is undoubtedly worth a play-through by all ARPG fans. <Dregs of Theopolis>

Is the weekend beta still going for everyone? I ask because I noticed today that it still works for me and now says beta ends on Thursday.
Unfortunately, I have no urge to play it because it's boring as hell and just feels generally awful. |

...That's what I loved about TL1 as well. Just how inoffensive it is. There's a reason you don't see huge wars in the Runic forum about TL2 vs anything. Torchlight does its own thing, amiably, steadily, competently. It doesn't seek to usurp anything or to be better than.
It's there for everyone to enjoy or not enjoy. That simple. I do love that. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.
