I am honestly shocked you've never heard of a cannula. Never had a drip feed in hospital or known anyone to have needed IV? Really? My idea of everyday speech must be a little more...experienced than others', then. My sister's had one, because she's had a baby. Strangely enough, so has my mother. It's not absolutely the same procedure for all hospitals but it's almost standard. Know anyone who's had a baby? Appendix removed? Anything at all where they needed fluid or hydration and couldn't for some reason take it orally? No?

OH well. No accounting for the things people on the internet (the world's largest database...ever) don't know.

Charan, It is understandable that few people have heard cannula before. I was in the hospital for a few days with an IV and not once did anyone ever say cannula. Not everyone uses the same words or experiences the same things as everyone else. Please try to consider this before possibly insulting others. :P

Yeah yeah, okay. Sorry. And stuff.

If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.
English has too many words. Things like cannula get forgotten about because IVs are more known about.

I have, but I think you're missing the point: cannula is jargon. Most people don't use it everyday, and those that do use it in specific contexts. People see TV shows and movies with labs full of glassware, but they're unlikely to know what an erlenmeyer flask is.

Consider the (somewhat) related word canaliculus: have you ever heard it?

yeah tell me about it it's like nobody knows latin or greek!!

Google: cannula. And then, for a laugh, google: cannula quiver. You will see THIS very thread is the only non-medical hit for several pages.

Undoubtedly; there's no argument that cannula never had a meaning specific to quivers.

Because it is in everyone's interests to be gay about this.

The worst thing carnal ape will do is get a smirk.

Nobody is actually offended by it. I vote keep it, it's flavourful.

It actually strikes me as being synonymous with "vicious ape" ... but more so. Sounds dangerous, like it wants to rip your flesh off. I wonder if there's a substitute word that would even have this implication.

Those mitts ... well, maybe they want to make YOU rip the flesh off of things. Though I'm not sure why a mitt would have a mind of its own to want such things. Either way, at least "mitts of carnage" could possibly work here, but then you're having to switch the word order.

...And though I see why some might think if a word could be taken in a lolzy sort of way, that it should be changed, think of the number of things like this that generate conversation and add a flavor to the game lore, inside jokes, sticks in the mind, etcetera.

Charan comes off a little strong like that sometimes, but I don't think he means it to be insulting. In fact, that he could have a flaw at all seems to me a bit of a relief, as it shows he's still human. :)

I should perhaps explain that. There was a big thread on, basically, "WHY U SPEND SO MUCH MONEYS?" and he posted several things that others were worried might have been wasting his breath, but they just showed me what a cool guy he really is. And his general focus and maturity is something I strive for myself and don't always achieve. ADD issues and all, lack of focus to turn my motivations into productive energy...

As for cannula (LOL at this point):

I had an IV once when I was 8, and once when I was around 25. Never heard anyone say cannula, what can I say? Hehe. Or if they did, I didn't notice it. Both are very likely, as I miss things sometimes, but I don't recall them ever describing all the parts of their equipment to me in any case.

It concerns me a little when I don't know words that others find more common. As someone who wants to be a writer, I find it troubling. But oh well, I have to do with what I can, and try to pick up each new word I can along the way. And as has been mentioned, learning to better use the words we know is preferable to throwing out a bunch of new ones without knowing how to properly use them in context.

Hello, nice to see you too :). Do not worry I did not mean to say that Charan was intentionally trying to insult others. In fact I have seen much of his input in chat and the forums and he seems to be a good person.

There was also no need for Charan to apologize. I just suggested that others may find what he said insulting, in a condescending kind of way.

I just thought I would put this here to apologize for any derailing of the thread.

MAY THE CARNAL APES LIVE ON IN INFAMY!
They said I was mad! They said it couldn't be done! But now who's mad?!?!
So, what I've gotten from this thread is...

At some point, we're going to be able to buy Carnal Pants of the Cannulastic Legholes from the cash shop, right? Cosmetic only, of course...

But on a more serious note, I feel like carnal ape does (unintentionally) imply sexuality, and we'll probably see all the thirteen year olds making rape jokes when all the thirteen year olds hit the game at launch. I personally don't care much either way, though the jokes might get old eventually if I am correct about them.

I think the original intent of this thread is reasonable though. Sometimes writers just go thesaurus-crazy, and it is not a good thing. I just read a series by one author whose rule of thumb seemed to be "never use a common word when you can look up an archaic one or use a common word with its less-known definition," and it was frankly incredibly annoying.

Games like this spitting out unlikely names is part of the fun, though, so I'm not sure if it needs changing. Maybe. Who knows.
I'm more concerned the "Pirate Ship Graveyard Cave" is going to be a permanent name for that area where you get the All-Flame lol. Couldn't it have a more poetic title?
