POE Heading to D3 Land...please reconsider

Not quite gone the direction it was advertised in 2010 heh ?

One of the weirdest things with the loot and drop system is that around level 50 and above; the drops of orbs and rare gear is way less then at the starting levels. I have the feeling that this is by design. I think from level 50 on the need for better gear is higher because the content is harder. One thing that Tl2 did very well was the loot system: it felt always rewarding till the highest levels without muling or trading. I think GGG has a long way to go till they get it right.

i dont know. in torchlight 2 you got so many crap "uniques" and rares thrown at you that you totally lost excitement when a unique or rare dropped. its the total opposite of poe but i think also too extreme. why not meet in the middle and do it d2 style? i never had the feeling i get bombarded with junk or nothing at all there.

It's a goal, not a requirement to reach a goal. I have lvl 74 melee and lvl 77 ranged chars, I spent 3 exalteds worth of orbs to gear each of then and they are feeling themselves fine soloing lvl 72 maps with 120 IIR.

And where did you get 6 exalts from? You either got very lucky with good drops either traded a lot. Because across dozen characters (from races ) and 3 lvl ~60, 1 lvl80 and 2 lvl 70 I have found 2 exalts ,~20 chaos, ~6 gcp and 1 divine.

My 2c.

I have never had an issue with gearing myself up.

Lvling in the 1wk race, lvling at the start of OB, whatever, I didn't feel like gear was too hard to come by or that trading was 'required'.

I myself found 1 exalted 1 divine 4 gcp and maybe 10 chaoses across 2 characters. BUT:
crappy rares->vendor->alterations->jewelers->fusings. Got 60 fusings that way.
Most ppl are willing to trade for fusings at 2:1 rate to chaos.
So i just offer 6 fusings for a good (not godly just good) piece of lvl 50+ gear and usually get it.

Oh and i do not waste currecy on craft, apart from some alt to make some better leveling blue items and some jewelers/fusings to make a 3L.

I have a shop but i sold only 2 items in it for 10 chaoses total and that is what paying for my 3rd character i'm leveling right now. And i don't play buy cheap / sell high. I just use the currency i find the most efficien way i can.

1. This game should have the "jewel" system from Diablo 2, set to magic only (rares not possible). If you want to turn your six-socket armour into some ghetto version of Kaom's, you should be able to. That would open up some more interesting choices: do you want this support gem or +life? Do you want to support faster attacks for an increased mana cost, or get a much smaller boost to attack speed (on all skills) for free? More choices = good things.

You mean something like this: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/315259/page/1 :D

I think the rare gear drops kinda decently enough, even tho it's 99,99% crap. It is disappointing with rare mobs drop rates though...

My gripe would be with the orbs and trading...I want to build my own gear. Atm it's random as hell, but that wouldn't be the problem if orbs dropped much much more. As solo player and not 24/7 multiboxing no-lifer there's no way in hell I can scour/alch, or alt or jewel and link 1 good item from the orb drops I've gotten in what, 2 months of up to 50 hrs playtime/week (not every week tho and I'm guessing I'm not playing at max efficiency). Hell, I can't even make 1 gem 20% quality from 0% purely from GCP drops I got...and I'd want to 20% zillion gems, for different characters, tough luck eh.

And all that means I'm forced to trade or spend an eternity grinding so I can gamble and hope I get lucky with "crafting". Oh sure, you can still play the game purely with selffound, but the progression you get from that is oh so slow (unless you're a lucky SOB). Which brings me to trading...for which there are many expletives I could use, but I won't, let's just say that for me, trading in this game is equivalent to cave-man bartering...and I don't see many ppl doing that anymore.

All in all, combat is decently fun and if you can live with sub-par gear it's ok to play, it just doesn't feel rewarding long-term for certain style of playing (inb4 RNG).
Very well put OP and completely agree.

I had been wondering if it was just my bad luck or imagination that drops etc seemed worse than CB.

My current char is a melee templar lvl 67 and since about lvl 40 I've only been able to improve 3 items of equipment and all of those were from trading...Nothing from drops.

The only choice I see for getting better gear is to either waste vast amounts of orbs trying to craft something and 99% of the time ending up worse off, or stop playing and sit on the trade chat/forums to buy gear and the only playing that is being done is basically grinding/farming to pay for the new gear.

Gaining 27 levels without a single useful drop is not fun.

I remember back when argps consisted of killing and looting, getting good and bad drops, but at all times no matter how amazing and shiny your latest toy was you kept playing knowing that there was a chance of something even better dropping later. Self found was a valid way of playing.

PoE seems to have removed this reward and it now consists of killing mobs, getting orbs, sit on trade to get new gear.

I want to play a fast and fun hack n' slash, not a slow farming trading simulator. I enjoy self found because you never know what kit you will end up using and anticipation of what might drop is part of the pleasure of playing, at the moment it's a case of farm x amount to buy item y, no mystery, no pleasure of "wow...look what just dropped"

I can't find the link right now, but Chris confirmed this in a Reddit post.

I would have to see that link to believe it, as community cannon is that currency drops are flat thoughout the game.

--C

Not sure if I can find the link either, but I remember the thread and the reason Chris gave out is that because certain orbs/currency items etc don't drop till higher levels (chisels and others) there is a fractionally higher chance of, say an exalted, dropping earlier than later because there is less currency items to choose from.

Basically there is a flat chance to drop but less of a pool to choose from in the earlier levels.

Hope this makes sense.

Edit... found the thread here http://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile/comments/1azg9e/are_high_level_currency_orbs_more_likely_to_drop/

"
Technically a few orbs start dropping at levels higher than 1 (fusings, chisels, for example) so yes, mirrors and exalted orbs are a tiny amount more likely to drop at very low levels.
