I guess PoE has become like WoW, where everyone claims there was a some golden era and the game always seems to be "dying" but never actually dies, just keeps trucking. Not a bad thing to be compared with - WoW is a highly successful game.
Both will actually die one day of course. But that's still one hell of good run.

Games with various activities tend to have groups who come to the game for different reasons. MMORPGs and sometimes ARPGs have this complexity.
So you cannot look at the community as a lone voice. It isn't. It's a chorus of different likes/dislikes based on the persona of the person speaking at the time and it's impossible to make each one of them happy with the core game.
So its better to understand critical mass. That is the point in which more players are unhappy than are happy. For years devs can ignore the majority and it will cost them dearly. That's how you go from 12 million subscribers to less than a million. It doesn't happen all at once. Rather from a thousand cuts and over a period of years you realize it's not what it used to be.

That can be said about any community, not just MMOs or ARPGs. It's never a lone voice. As for PoE, the game still has a 90% positive rating on Steam. By contrast Lost Ark just came out and this forum has multiple threads on it, including one labeling it as a 'PoE Killer', yet it's rated 69% on Steam.

To be fair, a large part of that rating from my understanding is from server issues - in the EU especially.

The game has such a low rating because it got review bombed on Steam (and metacritic) by europeans whose servers are completely overloaded with people, so they have massive issues with matchmaking and long server queues. This really sucks, but has nothing to do with the quality of the games itself, only the service provider.
Despite these massive issues, they refuse to stop playing the game. People leave computers running early morning, start the game remotely from work to avoid queues just to play this "terrible game" with mixed reviews. It still has over 1 million concurent players on Steam (not counting Russia, Japan, and additional 200k+ players in Korea), which is absolutely insane for any game, not to mention an MMO (which, contrary to what some may think, are rather niche). I understand new game hype, but there is no way so many people would struggle through so much friction on a daily basis just to play a "hyped" game that they dont enjoy. New World had many issues on launch, and its playerbase dropped like a rock very quickly despite being buy to play (which means players are more invested), because the game itself was simply lacking in many aspects, even ignoring technical issues.

Streamer hype helps, and I will say new game with a legacy is also helping. PSO2 had a similar thing happen and while it might still be successful, I don't hear people talk about it as much any more.
That said, I think it's also way too early to say how Lost Ark is going to do. Strong start to be sure even with the server issues. And several reviews seem to be trying to link Lost Ark to New World, an unjust comparison given New World being such a cluster mess of a launch, it's probably gonna be in design text books.
Personally, the League is kinda eh and Lost Ark is something new and different pushed by good marketing. I can see why the numbers dropped but....
I say wait till Summer to see who's come back and who's maybe still grinding away at Lost Ark.

And let's not forget that, for a time, Path of Exile dropped down to mixed on Steam as well. Or that Lost Ark has orders of magnitudes more players on at once than PoE has ever had.

I don't know why so many people are defending this league/game.
This league has major issues. I'll get into details later. For now I'll just say it's full of boring nonsense.
`Spent 2 mirrors on my build, but I'm only Level 98.` LOL
`From just quick sweep of your characters, toxic rain, golems .. sure, non meta... sure.` LOL
`What are divs?`

People are mostly "defending" the patch, not the league. And I think A LOT of people actually like what they have done to the endgame, streamlined it, more player agency through the atlas passive tree and the fact that it's raining Scarabs from the sky.
Just the fact that you don't have to play solitaire with watchstones to progress is a godsend. Everything else is just a bonus. I can't think of one single thing the 'old' endgame did better than the current one.
The league mechanic is average, as it always is when it accompanies a major endgame expansion.
When it comes to the game as a whole, it will always have issues. That's the price to pay for being this progressive. They can't stay on top of everything when they push out new content as often as they do. We can all fantasize about "what if", but this is the route they have chosen - and maybe the route they had to chose in a F2P environment.
Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile. Last edited by Phrazz#3529 on Feb 21, 2022, 6:13:21 PM

You do not understand the issues. This league is far more boring than scourge. I'll explain later once I'm done with this league, which is soon.
There are improvements to atlas to ease confusion indeed but in the grand scheme of things, this league is just boring nonsense. More on that later.
