Fundamentally disagree here.
Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile.
Oh well. 3.16 will be interesting. We will see how many will return.
We will see if it is a good league or...

Pretty much everyone. Real question is for how long they will stay

Problem with this league is that players come in waves but the second wave of people that come to get 36 challenges around one month mark simply never came. Nor the third one.

People are heavily discouraged from playing the game on all fronts. Be it Steam reviews, forum, reddit or discord.

I have never realized how popular PoE have become but in off-topic rooms of other games its a very common discussion of what to play now when PoE have become shit.

If that is not discouragement i dont know what is

I do not have my hopes up tbh. It worries me that despite multiple podcasts the only indications we have for next league are some vague promises that things will be better but not as good as 3.17. Oh and by the way we are going to nerf FR Totems and aura stackers. Based on previous GGG balancing between leagues SST and Necro can also expect a hit.

Can only pray they give something back.

I would argue that steam players are the ones that drop off the most. For them PoE is most likely one of many games. On the other hand players that downloaded stand alone are the ones more commited to this game. They did care enough to redowload the game afterall. They are much less likely to take a break.

I can see that reasoning...but having been a long time player I have switched from stand alone until 2015ish, to Steam, and then back again a few years ago for all the reasons that most of us do it.

It is likely on the whole that Steam users are less experienced, but they also are likely lower knowledge so they are not as impacted by the nerfs because they don't know any better. Thus a strong argument can be made that the larger fallout is with stand alone users.

That's exactly what they're trying to get rid of though.

I'm still finding this league and all the nerfs less enticing to play though. I've been playing maybe an hour or two a week now. It's just all so meh.

No. Poeple that know the game will manage and keep playing. Those that dont know how to play and were relying heavily on gems are the ones that got hit the hardest. Thats the argument most "3.15 haters" make btw.
Maybe 3.16 will be later than expected. Otherwise would release be during D2R honeymoon period. First 3-6 weeks will quite all top youtube/twitch ARPG content be about D2R, not a good time to release next league.

Also after this league is it paramount that next league is a hit.

A tad too late for that now. It’s the same old story every league with GGG. They need completely fresh /new thinkers and improved diligence working on new league mechanics but then again, can you teach an old dog new tricks?
