DS respawns all mobs in the entire instance, so there is actually some challenge to get to the corpse. That doesnt happen in PoE for a good reason, so thats basically just a meaningless walk to your corpse and all you lost is a portal.

Fair enough, I didn't think of that one. :) But I didn't mean with a respawn. That's why I added a timer instead of it (which DS doesn't have). Essentially, if you just made a mistake and died, but you can otherwise handle what killed you, you'd get the restore. If you got in over your head into something that will kill you again - no restore (and likely another minus), so big mistakes would be penalized, small ones would be fixable.

But, yeah, I agree that the speculation is mostly academic, they probably won't change anything. But, hey, maybe we'll give them an idea for PoE 2. :)

What if it kept the dead enemies dead and full-healed the still-living ones? Then players could try their luck against a boss knowing that they need to kill it in one shot, but they don't lose out for making the attempt.

At the end of the day, that's the real problem, isn't it? The current system would probably work just fine if not for the rate of one-shots, but that would require a damage rebalance that GGG doesn't seem ready to do.

You could also shift the blame towards the players :)

Dont run shit you cant handle or invest in proper defense - basically.
HC players usually dont die to 1shots all that often. They surely do every now and then and they also do log out, but still the point stands.

You can avoid it, but then you cant just mindlessly alch&go and instead have to read map mods and reroll some rough combos.
Play smarter kinda ;)


The entire league feels like a tutorial for map mods to me.
Read the things on the remnants and you get loot, otherwise you will die. Simple concept and it does work.

It feels like the game doesn't reward defenses as much as strict DPS, but yeah, defenses do matter. I try to build for them, though I still get surprised sometimes.

Definitely true, though newer players might not know what's threatening and what's fine. When I have 84% fire res, I don't worry too much about "extra physical as fire". Crit mods are dangerous, certain curses, and so forth. Strangely enough, temporal chains hasn't been a problem for me this league, what with my damage being from RF.

I do enjoy the league mechanic this time around. I'd like it more if my preferred skill could output more damage without extreme investment, but at the same time, I didn't expect that SSF RF would get me to tier 16+ maps.
Death has other penalties besides XP loss. Portal loss, mechanic loss, time loss, item loss (heist). The XP penalty as is is fine to 85 but then it starts to bite especially weaker and undergeared builds. Perhaps from 85 to 99 the XP loss penalty should tail off from 10% up to 85, to 6% 85-90, to 3% 91-95, and then 1.5% 96+ or something like that.

The day they they kill xp loss on death will be the nail in the coffin for the atm anyways non existing fun curve of POE. Hear my words!

when every pleb even ripping 6 tps on t1 can grind up to 100 with no losses...
well, just go play diablo or or harvest moon guys...

Probably 1000 threads but more than 1000 people, I'd guess.

It just shows how much GGG loves the level 100 chase goal.

GGG will probably never change the death penalty. One just needs to live with it the way it currently is. I mean, I think GGG should come up with a different death penalty but, I know they never will.
